Retired Rear Adm. Paul Busick has been named FAA associate administrator for civil aviation security, replacing retired Army Gen. Michael Canavan, who resigned following September 11.
“If you haven’t flown a search-and-rescue (SAR) mission, it is difficult to appreciate just how hard it is to find an aircraft on the ground,” John Desmarais, emergency services plans officer at the national headquarters of the Civil Air Patrol, told AIN.

Comments on the Transportation Security Administration’s Twelve-Five Standard Security Program (TFSSP), which details the proposed requirements to comply with the TSA’s security program mandate for Part 135 airplanes with an mtow of 12,500 lb or more, were due August 19, but that deadline likely will be extended to at least September 19.
Plano, Texas Police threatened to close the airspace over future news events after helicopters from nearby television stations disrupted their attempts to end an armed, 12-hour standoff in March. Police said noise from orbiting television stations’ news helicopters hampered tactical officers’ ability to communicate with the suspect.
For the second time in three years the international requirements for ELT equipage are changing, but this time the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) promises that while the new rules will ensnare more airplanes than previous requirements, implementing them will be easier than before.
Air taxi operators are caught in a conundrum. Comments are due August 19 on the Transportation Security Administration’s draft standard security program (TFSSP) for air-taxi aircraft with a mtow of 12,500 lb or more (not more than 12,500 lb, as defined by FAR Part 25). However, obtaining a copy of the proposed TFSSP is not easy or quick.
By mid-June the national wildfire situation was speeding past all-time record proportions in nearly every category. According to a spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho, the total acreage burned so far this year is nearly double the 10-year annual average (861,786 acres) at 1,546,742 acres. “This is the driest much of the West, especially Colorado, has been in the last 50 years,” she said.
Growing interest from helicopter operators wanting to use night-vision goggles (NVGs) is spurring demand for better training as well. Feedback from long-time NVG users demonstrated that they improve safety, but lessons from the field also highlight the need to use the technology with caution.
