Eastway Jet Services was established in 1985 as a maintenance facility open to the public and was located in a 1,000-sq-ft hangar at Islip’s MacArthur Airport. In 1992, Eastway formed ExcelAire to operate an aircraft management company and now also offers aircraft charter. It is Argus Gold and Wyvern Wingman rated.

Viking Air of Victoria, British Columbia, will use the Avtrak GlobalNet platform to support its Viking MX factory maintenance tracking program. According to Viking, the system allows operators to easily plan, track and schedule maintenance activities, maintain regulatory compliance, and work closely with the OEM in monitoring overall aircraft systems reliability. It can also track all of an operator’s aircraft with a single system.
While best known for its comprehensive aviation training courses and its lineup of flight simulation devices, CAE has moved further upstream into the aircraft design process with new modeling and simulator products. The Canada-based company’s augmented engineering environment (AEE) is a suite of software and hardware products that will assist aircraft manufacturers with the design and systems integration of prototypes.
Sargent Aerospace & Defense is investing in extensive new facilities and reorganizing itself to be ready for what it anticipates will be an upturn in the aerospace market during the second half of 2011. St. Louis-based JetCorp Technical Services announced it will be moving into a new facility also located on Spirit of St Louis Airport. It includes a 57,000-sq-ft hangar with shop space, a component and sheet metal work area, an avionics facility, and new maintenance and sales offices.
According to a study conducted by research firm AeroStrategy, the aviation maintenance industry in the U.S. employs 274,634 people and annually “the industry’s direct and indirect impact on the U.S. economy is $39 billion.” The study is based on information culled from government data last year.

Larry Shiembob, general manager of Timken’s Aerospace Aftermarket Solutions in Mesa, Ariz., told AIN the company is enhancing its overhaul and repair operations by adding 100 new replacement parts to its portfolio of FAA-approved parts and assemblies. “We are sharpening our focus on engine overhaul and repair, and we expect customers to benefit from that emphasis,” he said.
