The Viking 400 Series Twin Otter will soon come equipped with a Safe Flight angle-of-attack (AoA) indicator as standard equipment. The TSO’d system consists of a lift transducer, computer and a speed indexer. The speed indexer provides the pilot heads-up guidance to approach AoA. The computer provides Arinc outputs to drive low airspeed awareness and AoA displays on the primary flight display. Safe Flight’s lift transducer is a heated leading edge sensor and is cleared for flights into known icing conditions.
Primary flight display
Aspen Avionics is extending its reach further into the general aviation market with a new VFR version of its primary flight display (PFD) glass panel retrofit product. Retailing for $4,995 (plus installation), the VFR 1000 PFD offers owners of older aircraft a way to add a single glass panel that replaces the traditional six-pack instruments, then later add additional capabilities, which are available as software upgrades. “This is tailored for the VFR pilot,” said John Uczekaj, Aspen president and CEO.
Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services, North America, a subsidiary of Vector Aerospace (Booth No. 5906), has brought a custom-modified integrated cockpit for display at Heli-Expo 2014. The cockpit consists of two Sagem 10-inch multifunction displays (MFDs) and two Sagem 10-inch primary flight displays (PFDs) for right or left seat operations. It is part of Vector Aerospace’s Bell Huey UH-1H (civilian Bell 205A) upgrade program.
Scott’s-Bell 47 (SB47, Booth No. 7422) has selected the Sagem (Booth No. 2814) ICDS-8A glass cockpit suite as part of the standard avionics package for the new 47GT-6 helicopter.
Helicopter manufacturers aren’t immune to the pressure to update their machines with modern avionics, and last year MD Helicopters and Universal Avionics Systems unveiled a new NextGen flight deck mockup for the MD 902 Explorer. The new avionics replace aging Bendix/King EFIS 40 cathode-ray-tube displays with high-resolution 10.4-inch Universal LCDs in landscape orientation.
The Pilatus PC-12/47E is the subject of a new FAA Airworthiness Directive that describes the unsafe condition as common grounding of both the pilot primary flight display (PFD) and the electronic standby instrument system (ESIS). If the common ground fails, both navigation systems could fail simultaneously, which could result in loss of control.
Honeywell, which provides SmartView synthetic-vision systems (SVS) for Gulfstream business jets with PlaneView avionics, Falcon jets with EASy II flight decks and Pilatus PC-12 NG turboprops with Apex cockpits, is far along in its development of a combined vision system (CVS), which marries forward-looking infrared to SVS, for helicopters.
Cutter Aviation received FAA STC approval for installation of Garmin G950 retrofit avionics in Piper Meridians with either the original Meggitt or Avidyne EFIS systems. The retrofit includes a new, custom-engineered panel and glareshield, providing a cleaner and more modern panel design. The package features two or three 12-inch Garmin displays (single primary flight display and single multifunction display or dual PFD/single MFD). Additionally, the G950 system incorporates the S-Tec IntelliFlight/Magic 1500 autopilot.
The UK’s Air Accident Investigation Board (AAIB) last month released details of the Dash 8 incident at Exeter Airport (EGTE) in Southwestern England, in September 2010.
Avidyne is close to obtaining certification of its DFC90 autopilot interface with Aspen’s EFD1000 PFD. Avidyne and Aspen Avionics demonstrated Avidyne’s new digital autopilot interfaced with Aspen’s EFD1000 Pro primary flight display (PFD) last month in two flight-test aircraft: a Cessna 182 and a Cirrus SR22. The DFC90 is currently certified in Cirrus SRs and Piper PA-46s equipped with Avidyne Entegra displays.
