Thanks in large part to the emergence of the PW1000G PurePower Geared TurboFan, Pratt & Whitney has staged what some might consider a stunning reversal in fortunes since its failure to win a place on the Boeing 787 and the well documented trials of the PW6000 just a few years back.

While focused on delivering geared turbofan (GTF) engines for the new Mitsubishi MRJ and Bombardier C Series, Pratt & Whitney is turning its attention to the wider applications of a technology that offers a 12- to 15-percent improvement in fuel burn by allowing the engine fan and low-pressure turbine to operate at optimum speeds.

Pratt & Whitney has (Hall 5 B20-B30) frozen the design configuration of the PW1000G geared turbofans for both the Mitsubishi Regional Jet and Bombardier C Series after finishing the final phase of demonstrator testing this past spring on an Airbus A340-600 testbed in and around Toulouse, France.

The biggest engine deal of Farnborough 2002 was undoubtedly FedEx’s selection of the Engine Alliance’s GP7200 engines to power its 10 A380 cargo megaliners. Though the value of the contract was not disclosed, it gives the Pratt & Whitney/General Electric joint venture parity in the A380 powerplant race with its Rolls-Royce rival.

The news that Pratt & Whitney had beaten Rolls-Royce and General Electric in the competition to power the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) was received in the company’s Connecticut headquarters with more than the usual celebration. It meant that Pratt & Whitney had secured a launch order for one of the most important engines it has ever developed.

The first Pratt & Whitney (P&W) PW6000-powered A318 aircraft has been delivered to engine-launch customer LAN Airlines, and marked the powerplant’s entry into service on June 18. Based in Santiago, Chile, the operator has ordered 44 engines and taken options on a further 41 units.
