Unseasonably bad weather at the 2012 Farnborough International airshow required exhibitors and visitors alike to dig deep into the reserves of resilience and flexibility that they have had to draw on in business conditions that remain uncomfortably unpredictable. But despite the near-relentless British rain, the event delivered no small amount of encouragement for the aerospace sector (primarily on the commercial side of the fence) and plenty of points of interest for industry watchers.

Pratt & Whitney will offer its PW4170 Advantage70 engine for Airbus’s revamped, 240-ton max takeoff weight A330. “The Advantage70 is the benchmark on the A330 aircraft program in terms of fuel burn, operating costs, reliability and time-on-wing,” said Lou Quattrocchi, the U.S. engine maker’s vice president of commercial programs.

Korean Air has selected the Pratt & Whitney PW4170 Advantage70 engine to power five new Airbus A330-200s. Valued at some $200 million, the firm deal covers 10 engines.

Pratt & Whitney offers the Advantage70 as both a new engine and as an upgrade kit for existing PW4168 engines. The upgrade includes a suite of technology enhancements Pratt & Whitney can incorporate during engine overhauls, and promises a 2-percent thrust increase, more than 1-percent reduction in fuel burn, increased durability and lower maintenance costs.

Asiana Airlines has selected Pratt & Whitney’s fleet management program for three of its P&W-powered Boeing 777s, the engine manufacturer announced here at the Singapore Airshow. Eagle Services Asia, Pratt & Whitney Global Service Partners’ engine overhaul facility in Singapore, will be responsible for the six-year agreement, which provides for the maintenance of six PW4090 turbofans that power the aircraft.

The European Aviation Safety Agency granted type approval for the Airbus A330-200F today, following a 200-hour flight-test campaign. Airbus performed the trials with two aircraft, covering both engine types on offer: the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 and the Rolls-Royce Trent 700.
