Carrying the flag for the Russian civil aircraft industry on static display last week at the Dubai Airshow, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 made an impression on both sides of the globe as Mexico’s Interjet prepared to press into service its third copy of the 100-seat regional jet.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) last Thursday gained Russian certification of a long-range version of the Superjet 100 known as the SSJ100-95LR, following 115 hours of testing during 60 flights since February 15. Five percent more thrust generated by the airplane’s Powerjet SaM146 turbofans and strengthened wings increase the airplane’s range to 2,472 nm from 1,590 and maximum takeoff weight to 109,109 pounds from 101,150.

Mexico’s Interjet expects to take delivery of its first Sukhoi SSJ100 this month.

The 1:20 scale model of a Sukhoi Superjet 100 at the jointly occupied SuperJet International-Powerjet stand at the RAA annual convention in Montreal sports the colors of Mexico’s Interjet for good reason: The Mexico City-based airline expects to take delivery of its first SSJ100 by the end of this month.

Russia’s General Account Office (GAO) has completed a study into the Sukhoi Superjet 100 program and found it “under the threat of closing down.” In its report, the GAO says that direct government investment in the project from 2003 to 2010 amounted to 16.9 billion roubles ($513 million).

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) granted type approval in late January to Franco-Russian engine maker PowerJet for a more powerful version of the SaM146 turbofan. Designated the SaM146 1S18, the engine offers 16,100 pounds of takeoff thrust, compared with the 1S17’s 15,400 pounds, thereby increasing the Sukhoi Superjet 100-95 LR’s mtow and extending its range to 2,470 nm with a full passenger load.

Former Powerjet chairman and CEO Jean-Paul Ebanga has assumed the role of president and chief executive officer of CFM International, the GE-Snecma joint venture announced today. Ebanga replaces Eric Bachelet, who had served as CFM president and CEO since September 2005. Bachelet has accepted the position of Safran executive vice president of research and technology.

Certification this past summer by EASA and the Russian authorities of the Powerjet SaM 146 engine no doubt marked an important milestone in Franco-Russian industrial cooperation. But the wisdom of the decision by France’s Snecma to participate in the program will remain a matter of debate for years to come.
