B. Coleman Aviation is building an FBO at Chicago-Gary International Airport, the company announced today. The facility will feature more than 25,000 sq ft of general aviation terminal and hangar area, in addition to a 12,500-sq-ft airside canopy large enough for Gulfstream and Bombardier ultra-long-range jets. Completion of the FBO complex is slated for the second quarter next year, though B. Coleman Aviation is now providing fuel sales and FBO services from a temporary facility at the field.
Shell Fuel distributor Eastern Aviation Fuels has bolstered its California footprint with the addition of three new FBO dealers. Landmark Aviation’s locations at San Diego International Airport (SAN), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Metropolitan Oakland International (OAK) will now be participating in the Shell AeroClass customer loyalty program, while LAX and OAK will also offer Shell contract fuel. Customs and immigration clearance is available at all three locations.
Henriksen Jet Center at privately owned Houston Executive Airport is now fully operational, with the completion of its 22,500-sq-ft terminal. The FBO began operations in 2006 and has done business from temporary trailers ever since. The facility has the world’s largest arrivals canopy (at more than 32,000 sq ft large enough to shelter a pair of Boeing Business Jets parked side-by-side).
With its acquisition of Jet Aviation’s London Biggin Hill maintenance facility early this year, the 328 Group, which supports the worldwide fleet of Dornier 328 turboprops and jets among others, also acquired the former Jet Aviation FBO, which it is operating under its newly established Jets brand.
Construction began recently on the south satellite control tower building at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The facility is to monitor traffic that will primarily use the airport’s new Runway 28L/10R, which is to open in the fall of 2015. The top of the tower-cab antennas will rise 219 feet agl, with the controller’s-eye-view inside the cab set at 194 feet agl. The $28 million facility is expected to operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
Fast-growing Bahrain International Airport (BIA) is expanding its present terminal by 50 percent to accommodate 13.5 million passengers. The $1 billion expansion project will provide an additional terminal area of 90,000 sq m and 10,000 sq m of retail space. Construction of the new BIA terminal is scheduled to start at the end 2014 with Phase 1 to be completed by the second quarter of 2016.
UK-based business aviation caterer Bon Soirée saw the busiest weekend in its 16-year history during the last weekend in May, taking in 350-percent more orders than on an average weekend. London-area airports were busy because of the Champions League final at Wembley, the Monaco Grand Prix, the start of the spring half term and the bank holiday weekend. This resulted in a “massive uplift in orders” for catering, even outperforming the rise in demand from the opening ceremony of the London Olympics last year, Bon Soirée said.
