Sierra Nevada Corp. has selected Parker Aerospace Gas Turbine Fuel Systems division’s thermal-management equipment to cool and heat its autonomous landing system (HALS) on Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. Sierra Nevada has a contract to fulfill the degraded visual environments (DVE) operational-needs statement issued by the U.S. Army aviation-networks mission-planning program directorate.

Canyon Engineering Products (Hall 4 Stand F7) has developed a line of dual- or multiple-port manual rotary-select valves that enable aircraft operators to isolate hydraulic pressure, at up to 5,000 psi, from specific systems to permit aircraft ground maintenance. The company’s rudder isolation valve, operating with 7.92 U.S. gallons per minute flow rate at up to 7.25 psi differential pressure, has an overall weight of 1.05 pounds, while another product is a three-port, two-position valve to isolate nosewheel door actuators for servicing.

The FAA has issued a final rule for an Airworthiness Directive for the Embraer Phenom 100 S/N 50000005 through 50000118, 50000120, 50000122 through 50000126, 50000128, and 50000131, certified in any category. The AD says it is prompted by failures of the flow control shutoff valve in the closed position.

The National Fire Protection Association’s technical committee on airport facilities has dropped a proposed requirement for automatic sprinkler systems in Group III hangars. The revision to the NFPA 409 Standard on Aircraft Hangars is set to be submitted to the NFPA Standards Council for final approval, according to NATA, and included in the 2010 revision of NFPA 409.

MD 600N, Vicksburg, Miss., Feb. 6, 2007–The NTSB said the loss of engine power on the MD 600, which landed hard on a logging road, was due to fuel starvation because the fuel transfer check valve was stuck in the closed position. The pilot was en route to refuel the helicopter, cruising at 115 knots at 500 feet agl, when the engine quit. The pilot autorotated and landed on the road, surrounded by tall trees.

CANADAIR CL-600-2B19, COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO., APRIL 17, 2004. After America West Express Flight 412 landed at Colorado Springs, Colo., and was taxiing to the gate, the cabin filled with smoke. The captain stopped the airplane and evacuated the airplane. The NTSB blamed the incident on a failed air conditioning fan bypass check valve and the subsequent overtemperature of the air conditioning pack.
