Piper Aircraft announced yesterday that it has placed the PiperJet Altaire program “under review,” clouding the single-engine jet’s future. It also named Simon Caldecott as its interim president and CEO, making him the fifth person to hold the position since Imprimis Brunei acquired the Vero Beach, Fla.

Piper Aircraft named 30-year aerospace veteran Michael Dow as chief of production for the PiperJet Altaire, the company’s in-development single-engine business jet. Dow was most recently group manager of manufacturing, engineering and tooling at Aurora Flight Sciences, and previously worked at Bell Helicopter for 11 years.

Since Brunei-based Imprimis bought Piper Aircraft in 2009, the company has seen almost a complete replacement of its leadership ranks and subsequently a redesign of the renamed PiperJet Altaire and a commitment to driving more sales outside the stagnant U.S. marketplace.

Piper Aircraft has selected ­Millennium Concepts to provide the passenger and crew seats for its new PiperJet Altaire. According to Kevin ­Reifschneider, Millennium’s president and managing director, the seats have been tested by the National Institute for Aviation Research and proven to withstand loads of up to 30gs while maintaining ­compliance with FAA requirements.

The L-3 Avionics Trilogy electronic standby instrument has been selected by Piper Aircraft and Pilatus as standard equipment on the new PiperJet and PC-12 NG, respectively, and as a component of the Sierra Industries G501SP digital avionics upgrade for the Cessna Citation 501. The 3-ATI backup indicator, which operates independently of other aircraft systems, is on display at the L-3 Avionics booth (No. 4308).

Piper Aircraft has been promoting its new PiperJet in the form of a proof-of-concept aircraft based on the PA-46-500TP Meridian turboprop-single platform. However, officials with the Vero Beach, Fla.-based manufacturer told AIN today that it will appear at the NBAA Convention next month with “the next step” in the evolution of its single-engine very light jet, complete with a full-size mockup.
