A statement by India’s ministry of civil aviation on Thursday has eased norms for import of all aircraft into the country. The government’s Aircraft Acquisition Committee (AAC)–which was set up some five months ago, headed by the minister of civil aviation and responsible for clearance of every aircraft imported into the country–has also been abolished, “as it is no [longer] relevant,” said the statement.

Ajit Singh, head of India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and members of the Association of Indian Commercial Pilots have begun another safety-focused battle of wills. The pilots have filed a petition in court claiming the minister overstepped his authority when his department increased the maximum number of hours pilots will be expected to fly in a single day, as well as the length of their maximum allowable duty day. The pilots claim Singh’s actions violate current Indian civil aviation rules.
A recent ruling by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will bar expatriates from holding right-seat airline positions beginning this month. Expatriates can still apply for captain positions, but right-seat pilots will lose their FATA (Foreign Air pilots Temporary Authority), which allows them to operate in India on the validity of their national licenses.
Pilot training specialist CAE here at the show on Tuesday announced the signature of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a joint venture with the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Under the agreement, CAE will be involved in two training centers in the country. A combined 400 to 600 pilots should be licensed annually through these new schools.
