For Sikorsky, 2013 was a mixed bag, according to company president Mick Maurer, who gave his company’s year-end summary presentation this morning. While the company reached a record backlog of more than $15 billion, it also recorded an 8-percent drop in sales, to $6.3 billion, the decrease driven largely by a drop-off in U.S. government orders on both the OEM side and the aftermarket side last year.

In the past two years alone, the New Berlin, Wis.-based company has opened a new production facility in Montana, expanded its existing offices in Montreal and Brazil to be closer to its OEM clients, and established a European customer-service base in Switzerland.

Jet Parts was recently named a Dassault classic authorized dealer, allowing the company to offer parts for legacy Falcon jets. “We’re at NBAA (Booth No. 5909) not only to maintain existing relationships but to meet new operators and explain the benefits of using Jet Parts services to help improve operating costs,” said Danny Suber, vice president of sales and marketing. “Now as a classic Dassault dealer, we are able to offer OEM quality parts at a discount.”

Columbus, Ohio-based Spirit Avionics has topped $10 million in global aircraft parts sales in less than a year, a 60-percent increase over last year’s sales. The company’s global parts support division distributes, sells and brokers new, overhauled and exchange parts and components through a network of OEMs and vendors. The global parts support division also manages component repairs, rentals, spares acquisition and surplus inventory consignment, and offers Rockwell Collins Casp and Honeywell Happ avionics warranty programs.

Sikorsky S-92 cabins are now being manufactured in India under a joint venture with Tata Advanced Systems. The facility recently increased production to four units per month.

As vendors await the announcement of belated contracts, India continues to grapple with its ever-changing defense procurement policy, with the latest–DPP 2013–announced and effective from June 1. The focus of DPP 2013 is on buying Indian defense products, even though these can fill only a fraction of the country’s requirements.

The Aircraft Electronics Association used the occasion of the 56th annual AEA International Convention and Trade Show to introduce its first Avionics Market Report, an accounting of what participating OEMs sold in the previous year. Nineteen OEMs participated in this year’s report, including Bendix/King, Garmin, Rockwell Collins and Honeywell Business & General Aviation. The gross sales for last year, including forward fit and retrofit units sold, totaled $6.3 billion, according to the report.
