Flight crews headed for Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) should pay special attention to the new Rnav (GPS) Z Runway 22L approach published February 6. The new procedure could increase the potential for conflict with smaller general aviation aircraft traveling along Lake Michigan’s western shoreline. The new RNP/GPS procedure will bring traffic across Chicago’s lakeshore just south of the downtown buildings for a straight-in to 22L.

Handling on average more than a million travelers a week and almost 1,000 aircraft movements a day, Singapore's Changi Airport is seeing record numbers of flights and passengers.

About 40 years after Singapore decided to build a new national airport at the former RAF Changi–initially anticipating requirements to accommodate 30 million passengers/year–the city state has seen a related decision also to reclaim land from the sea vindicated after traveller numbers reached 30 million in 2004, 40 million six years later and 50 million in 2012.

The so-called polar vortex that descended into the U.S. this week has wreaked havoc with airline schedules, according to statistics from industry data tracking service FlightAware. Airlines on Monday canceled 4,590 flights within, into or out of the U.S., while delays totaled 8,064. Chicago O’Hare registered the most cancellations of all the nation’s airports, both for incoming and outbound flights.

The Obama administration and the U.S. Congress appear headed to a confrontation over the administration’s plan to open a customs pre-clearance facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport that many lawmakers and airline industry groups oppose. An opponent said the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency plans to begin operating the facility on January 5.

NetJets “soft opened” its new 10,000-sq-ft dedicated passenger terminal solely for the fractional provider’s customers at Palm Beach (Fla.) International Airport last month, almost exactly a year after breaking ground on the facility. A formal grand opening is scheduled for November 6, but AIN was able to get a first look at the new complex just before the NBAA Convention this week.

As the City of Chicago finishes work before the official October 17 opening of the new Runway 10C/28C at O’Hare International Airport (ORD), control tower manager Robert Flynn released operational data of use to flight crews. Runway 10C/28C will be a Design Group VI surface 10,801 feet long by 200 feet wide. Its accelerate-stop distance available (ASDA) will be 10,540 feet, as will its landing distance available (LDA). Aircraft instructed to land on Runway 10C and hold short (LAHSO) of taxiway “GG” will find 9,610 feet of runway remaining.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has restricted takeoff and landing weight for all international airlines flying widebodies to Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to 196 metric tons (432,102 pounds) through September 30. The decision is a result of safety concerns following repeated cracks on the 46-year-old runway.
