A number of aircraft accident victims, who have never before spoken on camera and were the only survivors of an aircraft crash, are speaking now as part of a new documentary called, “Sole Survivor,” produced by Yellow Wing Productions. The film opened on a limited basis last week in Detroit and will run again in Minneapolis on May 23 as details of the world premiere are being finalized.

U.S. scheduled airlines have gone three years out of four without suffering a fatal accident, the last coming in February 2009, when the crash of a Colgan Air Bombardier Q400 outside Buffalo killed 50. Preliminary statistics released by the NTSB on April 20 show that scheduled Part 121 airlines recorded 26 accidents last year all told.

The NTSB has launched an investigation into an incident yesterday in which a Northwest Airlines Airbus A320 overflew its destination–Minneapolis-St. Paul International/Wold-Chamberlain Airport (MSP)–apparently as the crew engaged in a “heated discussion” over airline policy.

From a humanitarian perspective, regional air transport suffered perhaps its most destructive 24-hour stretch in history last month. Three separate fatal accidents, all unrelated but for the category of aircraft they involved, shook the industry at a time it could least afford the negative reaction. Once rescuers finished counting, the death toll totaled 72 in Turkey, 46 in Peru and 21 in the U.S.
