Two UK airports have joined to create a “National Aeronautical Center” (NAC) to develop, test and demonstrate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). West Wales Airport at Aberporth and Newquay Cornwall Airport in southwest England will jointly offer their facilities and runways, along with access to offshore testing areas, to UAS developers.
Weston Aviation has added another location to its growing chain of UK FBOs. The latest facility at Tatenhill Airfield and St. Georges Park Executive Aviation Centre is adjacent to the new National Football Centre near Burton-on-Trent, which opened last month. Given the airfield’s location, the new FBO will provide quick and discreet access to St. Georges Park. The new location brings the company’s stable of FBOs to five, with the others located at Durham Tees Valley, Humberside, Newquay Cornwall and Robin Hood Doncaster Airports.
Newquay Cornwall Airport (Hall 1 Stand B16) is hoping that helicopter manufacturer Agusta-Westland’s recent decision to establish a new flight training facility could prove to be the first step in building an aerospace business hub at the former Royal Air Force base in the southwest of England. The $1.5 million development was announced on March 31, and includes funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
After more than a year operating as a civilian airport, Newquay Cornwall Airport in the UK welcomed a new FBO facility built by Midwest Executive Aviation. The company used to operate from an office in the airport’s terminal building because the airport was a military facility until December 2008.
Newquay Cornwall Airport and its FBO Midwest Executive Aviation (Booth No. 391) are reporting a continued increase in business aviation at the airport, despite current European economic conditions. Midwest Executive reports a 10-percent increase in handled traffic in the first quarter of 2009, despite indications that aviation movements in Europe as a whole are down 25 percent compared with the same period in 2008.
Although it may not seem like a lot of traffic compared to a metropolitan U.S. airport, business jet movements at Britain’s Newquay Cornwall Airport were up 7 percent last year over the previous year and are expected to climb 10 percent, to more than 1,000 per year, this year. Newquay FBO Midwest Executive Aviation sees plenty of traffic making technical stops, thanks to the airport’s 9,000-foot nearly sea level elevation runway.
