The FAA this month will issue a rule requiring a new approach to stall training for airline pilots that runs counter to previous guidance. According to Dr Jeff Schroeder, the agency’s chief scientific and technical officer, the new approach will, “take a lot of work to undo previous training because some pilots are ‘spring-loaded’ to the previous technique.”
Aircraft charter and management firm Talon Air added four new Hawker 4000s to its Part 135 certificate this week. The super-midsize jets are based at Talon’s new 100,000-sq-ft hangar and office complex at New York’s Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Long Island. With nine Hawker 4000s on its charter certificate–nearly one-fifth of the in-service fleet of this type–Talon remains the largest owner and operator of these twinjets in the world.
Wilson Technological Center at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, N.Y., has received a Gulfstream II from JFI Jets owner and Long Island resident Arik Kislin. The retired aircraft, once owned by Frank Sinatra and more recently Harrison Ford, will serve as a training jet for students in the aviation maintenance technology program at Wilson Tech’s Republic Airport campus. “I love this airplane and truly hate to see her grounded, but after 44 years of service her time has come,” Kislin told AIN.
The FAA has issued a final rule that raises to 1,500 the minimum flight hours required by first officers for U.S. air carriers flying under Part 121 regulations, up from the current 250 hours. The new rules stem from a Congressional mandate following the 2009 crash of Colgan Air 3407, a Bombardier Q400, in Buffalo, NY. The rule also requires that first officers hold an ATP certificate and a type rating in the aircraft being flown.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) received a petition June 19 to reconsider its investigation of the July 17, 1996 crash of TWA 800, a Boeing 747 that exploded while climbing toward Paris shortly after takeoff from New York JFK International Airport. The petition was initiated by a group of people tied to a new documentary film called TWA800, due for release next month on the Epix cable channel.
On July 1, 2015, Santa Monica Airport in southern California may be a completely different airfield, if the city of Santa Monica has its way. On that date, the city wants to end all fuel sales, not renew any aviation-related leases and cut 2,000 feet from the airport’s 4,973-foot runway.

The Helicopter Association International (HAI) recently filed a petition with the U.S. Court of Appeals seeking to eliminate the mandatory North Shore Route for helicopters over New York’s Long Island. The FAA mandated the route in July last year after political pressure from U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). HAI has long argued that the North Shore Route is unsafe and that its imposition violates several laws.
