Former U.S. Air Force pilot Sean Gillette announced yesterday the launch of a new “personal jet” program, the Saker S-1, a twin-engine two-seater capable of flying 1,600 nm and cruising at Mach 0.95. With twin vertical fins, tandem seating and short fighter-like wings and stabilizer, the S-1 brings to mind the Aviation Technology Group Javelin.
Aerion, which has been defining and refining its design for a supersonic business jet (SSBJ) for the past 11 years, is here at EBACE (Booth 7030) still quietly confident that it will someday be able to add the word “producer” to its résumé. To that end, a NASA F-15 has been flying this spring from Dryden Flight Research Center in California with an 80- by 40-inch section of Aerion airfoil attached to its belly.
Aerion, which aims to develop a supersonic business jet, promoted Doug Nichols to CEO yesterday. Nichols, who was previously COO at the company, also joined Aerion’s board of directors. In his new capacity he is responsible for all corporate activities of Aerion, including its recently acquired Desktop Aeronautics aerospace software and consultancy subsidiary based in Palo Alto, Calif. “Doug’s promotion…will allow an increasingly vertically integrated Aerion to expand and monetize its portfolio of transonic and supersonic intellectual property,” said Robert M.
Air traffic management solutions company NATS is collaborating with UAE-based Royal Jet to help improve the environmental performance of the air charter firm’s flights in UK airspace. The partnership will see the two parties work together to improve Royal Jet’s flight efficiency, as well as reduce fuel burn and CO2 emissions. NATS will provide Royal Jet with actual data to monitor its flight profiles.
L-3 Avionics’s Trilogy electronic standby instrument received TSO approval from the FAA for use on Part 27 and Part 29 rotary-wing aircraft, according to the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based company.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is continuing its search for a lightweight and affordable low-speed indication and warning device for use in the civil helicopter market. The agency launched the tender in October, citing the need for accurate speed measurement and the poor performance of current pitot tubes.
Lord and Sikorsky are developing a lightweight, self-contained hub-mounted vibration system (HMVS) for the Connecticut manufacturer’s future medium and heavy-lift helicopters as part of Sikorsky’s “High Performance, Low Vibration and Low Noise Enabling Technologies Program” in cooperation with the U.S. Army. The HMVS system features motorized imbalanced rotors that rotate at the blade-pass frequency to create centrifugal forces.
