Ever since two pilots fell asleep in the cockpit of a Bombardier CRJ operating as Go! Flight 1002 during a February 2008 flight from Honolulu to Hilo, Hawaii, the NTSB has urged the FAA to tackle the issue of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among pilots. The captain of that aircraft was diagnosed with severe OSA after the flight.
There is a new way for pilots to get the oxygen needed for high-altitude unpressurized flying, Zodiac Aerospace’s Infiniox onboard oxygen-generation system (Obogs), and visitors to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh can see the system installed in a Cessna 206. This is the first time that Zodiac has displayed the Obogs installed in an airplane, and the 206 is parked at Zodiac’s exhibit (127) near Hangar D. Zodiac is also demonstrating its General aviation crew mask oxygen mask, also targeting the unpressurized single- and twin-engine market.
Cirrus Aircraft announced the expansion of its Grand Forks, N.D. facility to accommodate a new autoclave oven in preparation for production of the all-composite Vision SF50 jet. Modifications to the Grand Forks plant began in May and the autoclave was delivered late last week, with installation now under way.
“The building housing the autoclave will be constructed around this large piece of equipment,” Cirrus said, “and is expected to be complete by the end of July with a fully operational autoclave by mid-August.”

Embraer has signed a contract for sale of a Phenom 300 to Amil Assistência Médica. It will be the first medevac version of the Phenom 300. Delivery is expected in the fourth quarter.
Hard-to-access places on helicopter engines and airframes are easier to inspect with the proper borescope, and Borescopes-R-Us is exhibiting its new 4-mm portable videoscope at Booth No. 2816. The new Borescopes-R-Us PVS-2-4-1300 portable videoscope features two-way articulation and image-capture capability, for $5,995.
GKN Aerospace has developed a new repair process allowing hot-bonding of composite structure inside an autoclave. Autoclaves are used to manufacture complex composite parts by using heat and pressure to cure the components in a controlled environment. Repairing composite parts in normal atmospheric conditions requires costly specialized materials.
For around $10,000 per year, aircraft operators can now fly with diagnostic equipment that will allow them to relay vital medical data to ground-based emergency support physicians. The application of the equipment on air- craft is too new yet to have generated firm evidence on the extent to which it can save lives, but early indications are that in many cases it will make an important contribution to the effectiveness of in-flight treatment.
For aviators and their passengers, oxygen means life at the high altitudes traversed by modern aircraft. True high-altitude passenger flight wasn’t really practicable until large-cabin pressurization was introduced during the halcyon days of aeronautical development surrounding World War II, most notably aboard the Boeing 307 Stratoliner and Lockheed Constellation transports and Boeing B-29 bomber.
