State Sen. John Astle, a former Marine One pilot, wants to know why it is taking the Maryland State Police (MSP) so long to make its new fleet of AgustaWestland medium helicopters operational. MSP is replacing its aging fleet of AS365Ns with larger AW139s and will fly them dual pilot.

The Maryland State Police wlll fly 10 AW139s with two pilots on medevac and aerial law-enforcement support missions.

The Maryland State Police (MSP) Aviation Command has begun the process of integrating its new fleet of 10 AgustaWestland AW139s into operations, beginning at its Frederick Section or district. MSP has seven sections or bases throughout the state currently served by an aging fleet of 11 Eurocopter Dauphins. MSP aviation provides medevac and aerial law enforcement support throughout the state and in the national capital region.

The Maryland State Police unveiled the first of 10 new AgustaWestland AW139 medium twin-engine helicopters it will receive to replace its aging fleet of 11 Eurocopter AS365N Dauphins. The AW139s will be equipped with search-and-rescue, medical and law enforcement equipment as well as a full IFR avionics suite and safety-enhancing equipment such as H-Taws, night-vision-goggle compatibility, radar altimeters, satellite tracking, live video downlink, and cockpit voice and video recorders. The AW139s can perform hoist lifts while operating on a single engine.

When a veteran EMS helicopter pilot, probably thinking he was running out of options, decided to dive under a cloud deck to look for the ground, he crashed his Maryland State Police (MSP) Eurocopter Dauphin into terrain about 3.2 miles north of Andrews Air Force Base (ADW), killing all on board except for one of the two teenage traffic accident victims being transported to a nearby hospital.

American Eurocopter has lodged a protest concerning the Maryland State Police’s (MSP) request for proposal (RFP) to replace its fleet of 11 aging AS 365Ns. Eurocopter asserts that the RFP was designed to favor the AgustaWestland AW139. Eurocopter had proposed refurbishment, rather than replacement, of the Maryland fleet along the lines of what it has done for the U.S. Coast Guard’s fleet of HH-65s.

Eurocopter SA 365N-1D Dauphin, District Heights, Md., Sept. 27, 2008–The Maryland State Police medevac helicopter crashed in a park in District Heights, killing the commercial pilot, a paramedic, a field provider and one of the two patients aboard. The heli- copter had picked up the two auto accident victims and was flying them to a hospital.

Aerospatiale SA 365N-1 Dauphin, Camp Springs, Md. Sept. 28, 2008–The Maryland State Police EMS helicopter crashed three miles from Andrews AFB while on a medevac flight. Of the five people aboard, four were killed and one was severely injured. According to news sources, the aircraft had diverted to Andrews because of weather.

Commercial aeromed helicopter operators are claiming that Maryland state officials are overstepping their authority in a bid to impose additional rules restricting emergency air-transport operations in that middle Atlantic state. Maryland’s statewide EMS system is run by its state police.
