Runway 16R/34L, the primary runway at Van Nuys Airport in southern California, is closed until July 26 at 11:59 p.m. The closure is part of a $20.5 million improvement program, which includes asphalt milling and paving of more than 4,000 feet of the center section of the runway. Runway 16L/34R (4,000 feet long) remains open as normal (closing at night from 10:45 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Pilots are urged to check notams before flying to Van Nuys. The runway improvement project will be completed in August.

APP Jet Center has broken ground on a new 20,000-sq-ft heated hangar at its Manassas Regional Airport facility near Washington, D.C. When completed in January, the FBO’s sixth hangar will be able to accommodate business aircraft up to the size of a Gulfstream G650. The addition will bring the total aircraft storage space at the facility to 150,000 sq ft. APP’s existing hangar space at Manassas is fully occupied, and the company said it continues to receive inquiries from operators based at Dulles seeking to relocate there.

Construction on the first section (north end) of the main runway at Van Nuys Airport is expected to be completed this month. The $20 million renovation project, which began in February, aims to rehabilitate and modernize the 8,000-foot Runway 16R/34L to meet current FAA design standards.

Just four days after being buried by record snowfall in the Washington, D.C. area, business aviation in the nation’s capital is bracing itself today for another four to eight inches. Reagan National Airport recorded 16.4 inches of snow on Friday and into Saturday, and reports from outlying areas were in excess of two feet of the white stuff.

Virginia’s Manassas Regional Airport, 30 miles from Washington, D.C., now offers U.S. Customs clearance services at the terminal building from 6 a.m. to midnight. Manassas has grown as an alternate airport for operators flying to the D.C. area, offering no landing fees, competitive fuel prices and two parallel runways, the longest 5,700 feet.

Runway 16L/34R (5,700- by 100 feet) has been returned to limited service at Manassas Regional Airport (HEF) in Virginia. Some additional construction work remains to be completed, so there may be 15-minute periods of prior permission required (PPR) operation. At times, the runway could be closed altogether.

Billed as private and secure for aircraft owners, the $3.5 million Manassas FlightWorks facility features 30,000 sq ft of hangar space, 10,000 sq ft for offices and 11 private garages where aircraft management customers can park their cars during trips.
