Alberta, Canada-based Eagle Copters has an impressive engine modification to show Bell 407 pilots, operators and owners at Heli-Expo 2010. Dubbed the “Eagle 407 HP,” the popular, single-turbine helicopter sports a 1,021-shp Honeywell HTS900 engine. Though still to be flight tested and certified, the engine upgrade has the promise of providing the popular model with the power it needs for improved operations at higher altitudes.
Eurocopter AS 350D, Avalon, Calif., May 24, 2008–N67GE, operated by Island Express Helicopters under Part 135, crashed while landing at Santa Catalina island. The commercial-certified pilot, a company employee and a passenger were killed and three other passengers were seriously injured.
Helicopter turboshaft manufacturers are incorporating new technologies in their engines to lower fuel burn, enhance capabilities and reduce operating costs. The major manufacturers are developing engines to meet these demands, along with the need for more power and lower emissions.
Precision Air Group (Booth No. 2960), which provides overhaul and repair for Honeywell LTS101 and TPE331, Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney Canada fuel controls and accessories, is here at Heli-Expo highlighting the opening of its new facility in Vancouver, B.C. PAG also has a facility in Atlanta, Precision Avionics, as well as the two Canadian companies, Precision Heliparts and Precision Accessories and Instruments.
Honeywell Aerospace (Booth No. 1310) announced the selection of its LTS101-700D2 turboshaft to replace the existing engine in the Chinese Z-11 helicopter. New production engines will begin leaving the Honeywell Engines Phoenix plant for China in the first quarter of next year, said Doug Kult, director of helicopter and surface systems sales.
Honeywell Engines comes to Heli-Expo with five turboshaft models ranging in age from venerable to brand-new and in power from 1,000 shp to 5,000.
Air ambulance operator Guardian Flight has purchased its first helicopter, a Soloy-modified Eurocopter AS 350BA, on display here at the Soloy Aviation Solutions booth (No. 713). The Soloy SD1 modification replaces the AS 350’s original Turbomeca Arriel engine with a Honeywell LTS101-600A-3A. Guardian Flight is headquartered in Fairbanks, Alaska, with satellite bases in Ketchikan, Dutch Harbor and Sitka.
Soloy has received the 100th LTS101 turboshaft from Honeywell for the Olympia, Wash. company’s Eurocopter AS 350 engine conversion program. Soloy Aviation Solutions and Honeywell inked a pact for AStar AS 350BA and AS 350B2 re-
engining in 2004.
Soloy Aviation Solutions said it received approval from Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency for its Honeywell engine conversion for Eurocopter AS 350BA and B2 helicopters. “This approval opens the way for Brazillian operators to have the same engine options for these popular helicopters as currently enjoyed by our many existing customers,” said David Stouffer, Soloy’s CEO. Previous STC approval had been obtained from the FAA.
Honeywell Engines has adop-ted a pioneering role in the U.S. Army’s Small Heavy Fuel Engine (SHFE) development program, an advanced joint program started five years ago to develop and demonstrate turboshaft engines in the 700-shp class. The program has sought to achieve a number of lofty goals including a 20-percent reduction in specific fuel consumption, a 50-percent power-to-weight improvement and a 35-percent reduction of life-cycle costs.
