Ontario, Canada-based aerospace structural, landing gear and engine components manufacturer Noranco sealed a five-year deal with Goodrich’s landing gear business this week at the Farnborough Airshow. The agreement calls for Noranco to supply Goodrich with complex titanium landing gear components for the Airbus A380.
Swiss aerospace firm Ruag has agreed to partner with E Aviation on the management of its FBO at Lugano Airport. Ruag’s strong aircraft maintenance background and its experience with its FBO in Geneva will allow the Lugano FBO to offer products from passenger and crew services to technical assistance and line maintenance. The two companies believe that Lugano will become the business aviation hub for northern Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland.
Ruag Aviation is expanding its FBO activities to Switzerland’s Lugano Airport by partnering with E Aviation Lugano, the local FBO provider. With Ruag’s strong footprint in maintenance and aircraft, the two companies now offer an array of services at Lugano, ranging from passenger and crew services to technical assistance and line maintenance services. The companies believe that Lugano Airport will be the business aviation hub for northern Italy. Ruag also has an FBO at Geneva Airport.
Swiss regional airline Baboo, based in Geneva, and Darwin Airline, headquartered at Lugano Airport in southern Switzerland, an-nounced in late November that they have decided to merge. In fact, the move looked more like a takeover by Darwin of a competitor plagued by a notorious lack of profits.
London Heliport Opens New Terminal
Switzerland’s regional scheduled airlines seem relatively well prepared to face a passenger slump expected to last through next year. After a frantic build-up period in the early years of the current decade, followed by a shakeout, the four majors appear entrenched in their respective markets.
Crossair founder Moritz Suter announced on July 17 that he plans to launch a new regional airline. The airline’s first service would link Geneva with Lugano three times daily.
Although the project remains in its infancy, Suter has already submitted proposals for support to the township of Lugano and the local government of the canton of Ticino, as well as the Lugano Agno Airport for “symbolic” (low) landing fees.
Swiss authorities have implemented plans for a six-degree approach angle at Lugano Agno Airport, effectively banning the airplane most frequently used there–the Saab 2000 turboprop. The rule change came as several parties jockeyed for position to start new regional operations into Lugano with Saab 2000s after Swiss International Airlines announced plans to severely curtail its service there.
Major structural changes announced by Swiss International Airlines in June include a considerable reduction of the company’s regional network with the start of its winter timetable, in late October. But while Swiss frantically clutches for a financial lifeline, there appears no shortage of newcomers willing to fill the airline’s shoes.
Swiss will replace its four daily flights between Zurich and Lugano with the same number of flights subcontracted to Cirrus Airlines as of April 1. Under the wet-lease agreement, the German carrier will use 50-seat de Havilland Dash 8-300s in a mixed configuration.
