Emissions from turbine aircraft are one of the main objections held by those who want southern California’s busy Santa Monica Airport closed, yet in a recently released study, emissions from nearly Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) suggest an unexpectedly severe impact on residents downwind of major airports.
Gulfstream Aerospace has expanded its worldwide service and support network by opening a parts and materials distribution center near Los Angeles. The 5,000-sq-ft facility at Van Nuys Airport primarily serves Gulfstream customers in the western U.S. and Canada, shortening delivery times and minimizing shipping costs.
In a ceremony held this morning at Van Nuys (Calif.) Airport, Clay Lacy Aviation owner Clay Lacy donated two “historic” jets to the local aviation maintenance school, North Valley Occupational Center-Aviation (NVOC-Aviation). NVOC-Aviation is operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District adult education program and offers one of the most inexpensive ways for aspiring aircraft mechanics to study for the FAA mechanic certificate with airframe and powerplant ratings, with the 2.5-year full-time program costing just $2,400.
Air Culinaire Worldwide has opened an in-flight kitchen at Mineta San Jose International Airport to keep up with increasing client demand and enable last-minute requests in Silicon Valley. The in-flight kitchen is located in the Atlantic Aviation FBO and is the only one based on the field. It is the fourth Air Culinaire Worldwide kitchen based in California, joining locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Van Nuys, and brings the total number of Air Culinaire Worldwide kitchens to 20.
Castle & Cooke has completed a $12 million upgrade of its FBO at Los Angeles-area Van Nuys Airport (VNY). Originally designed as a private corporate complex, the facility now has a 1,500-sq-ft transient passenger lounge and a new 38,000-sq-ft hangar that can accommodate the latest class of ultra-long-range business jets, for a total of 187,000 sq ft of aircraft shelter on its nine-acre leasehold. The company also added two acres of ramp area.
U.S. aviation services provider Castle & Cooke has been an ABACE exhibitor since 2012, explaining the role of a fixed-base operator (FBO) to show attendees who might not be familiar with the fueling and ground-handling services such a company provides to private aviation. As the company returns to the Shanghai show for the third time, it is providing a translator (Booth H431) to more fully answer attendee questions.
Signature Flight Support completed its acquisition of Maguire Aviation Group at Van Nuys Airport. Through this acquisition, Signature expanded its FBO at Van Nuys to a combined footprint of 1.17 million sq ft of hangar, ramp, passenger lounges and office space. This also includes a dedicated NetJets facility at Van Nuys.
Bill Cutter, Madison Cutter and Will Cutter put a bow on Cutter Aviation’s year-long 85th birthday celebration yesterday at the service provider’s booth (No. 9616). The company is the oldest and largest family-owned FBO chain in the U.S., operating nine bases in five states. Its most recent opened over the summer at Van Nuys Airport, Los Angeles.
Clay Lacy Aviation (Booth No. N5115) has added 15 more aircraft to its managed and charter fleets so far in the second half of 2013. The Van Nuys, Calif.-based company said that the additions represent the highest rates of growth in those fleets since the company was founded in 1968 and suggested that it is a strong signal of a resurgent business jet market, especially in Southern California.
Business aircraft operators and pilots weary of the high cost of flying into Los Angeles International (LAX), noise restrictions and curfews at Van Nuys and Burbank, or the un-welcome mat represented by Santa Monica’s higher landing fees can find respite in a hidden gem in the Los Angeles metroplex, Jack Northrop Field/Hawthorne Municipal Airport and its FBO, Jet Center Los Angeles. The airport is located about two miles east of LAX.
