Air Line Pilots Association union leaders and American Eagle management reached an agreement in principle last month that would guarantee the 60 Embraer E175s ordered by American Airlines go to the wholly owned regional carrier. In return, Eagle pilots would have to forego any pay raises until 2018 and accept increases to their contribution to their health insurance premiums starting next year.
Boeing’s machinists voted last Friday to accept some steep contract concessions in return for management’s promise to build the 777X in the Puget Sound region of Washington state, finally succumbing to corporate pressure to relinquish their defined benefits pension plan for a 401k-style arrangement. The vote hardly reflected any sort of consensus, however, and highlighted a rift between workers willing to stand on a principle and those who claim a responsible sense of pragmatism.
Bell Helicopter is going back to school, teaming with the Fort Worth (Texas) Independent School District (FWISD) and Tarrant County College (TCC) to provide advanced, “state-of-the-art” aviation and engineering training for students at Dunbar, a local high school.
Aviall has earned recognition as a 2014 Military Friendly Employer by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse magazines. This marks the second consecutive year Aviall has earned this recognition. Companies competed for the title in a survey of more than 5,000 employers. The resulting survey data was independently tested by Ernst & Young based on methodology established by Victory Media.
When tornados and storms ripped through central Illinois on November 17, Chicago-based Jet Support Services (JSSI) organized an employee donation match initiative for the victims.
“So many of us felt a connection with these specific tornado victims because they are less than 200 miles away from our corporate headquarters in Chicago,” Frank Hattula, director of human resources for JSSI, told AIN.
No sooner did Boeing begin evaluating bids from 22 U.S. states to build all or part of the new 777X last week when it re-entered talks with its machinists union, suddenly brightening the prospects for the incumbent, Washington state. By Thursday, however, it seemed the sides had gained little or no ground in their efforts to strike a deal for a contract extension, as union leaders quickly rejected Boeing’s most recent “best and final” offer.
Jet Aviation Singapore and Air Transport Training College at Seletar Aerospace Park will jointly support a licensed aircraft engineer training program for business aviation. As part of the agreement, Jet Aviation will provide required on-the-job training opportunities to students enrolled in the program.
Patrick Cau, a German citizen and former United Airlines flight attendant, has been sentenced to 18 months in a U.S. federal prison for making eight false bomb threats against United Airlines flights. Cau was fired by the airline about a year before the first threats began surfacing from a variety of U.S. cities in late 2012. Cau must also pay nearly $314,000 in restitution to both his former employer and the Los Angeles Police Department for expenses related to the threats.
Western Aircraft received the OSHA Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (Sharp) award, for its safety and training. This year marks the seventh year in a row the company received the honor.
Sharp recognizes employers with fewer than 250 employees who operate excellent safety and health management systems. Sharp is one of the highest awards OSHA can give to a small company.
Lockheed Martin announced last Friday that it plans to close four facilities and reduce operations at a fifth, with the loss of 2,000 jobs. The closures affect the company’s Information Systems & Global Solutions (IS&GS); Mission Systems and Training (MST); and Space Systems business areas. A further 2,000 jobs in these business areas will be eliminated through “operational efficiency initiatives,” the company said.
