Prospects for private aircraft charter in the month leading up to the Christmas and New Year holidays appear markedly stronger in North America than in Europe, according to the latest data from online charter portal Avinode.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport
Air traffic controllers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) cannot carry out simultaneous dual-runway operations due to lack of so-called non-transgression-zone software, resulting in congestion in Malaysian airspace and a choke point for takeoff at KLIA. The airport’s pair of 13,000-foot-long runways can accommodate 32 arrivals and 36 departures per hour.
Airlines have lodged complaints about the excess fuel their airplanes burn while caught in departure queues, at times waiting for as long as 25 to 30 minutes before ATC can clear them for takeoff.
Malaysia’s SkyPark Subang aviation hub will be expanded at a cost of almost $67 million with the aim of attracting more FBOs and maintenance, repair and overhaul companies. The bulk of the redevelopment budget (around $48 million) will go toward building a new terminal at the site of Kuala Lumpur Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport’s mothballed Terminal 2, which will be demolished.
Malaysia-based low-fare carrier AirAsia plans to phase out its foreign pilots as part of the carrier’s goal to employ an all-Malaysian workforce and to cut costs. The exercise would happen gradually with the expiration of the pilots’ respective contracts.
Fast-growing Bahrain International Airport (BIA) is expanding its present terminal by 50 percent to accommodate 13.5 million passengers. The $1 billion expansion project will provide an additional terminal area of 90,000 sq m and 10,000 sq m of retail space. Construction of the new BIA terminal is scheduled to start at the end 2014 with Phase 1 to be completed by the second quarter of 2016.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has launched a campaign to convince new airlines to launch flights to six international airports in the country.
Malaysian Airlines has signed a deal with Canada’s Viking Air to take six new 19-seat Twin Otter Series 400s for use in scheduled service by its regional subsidiary MASwings. Viking plans to deliver all the airplanes by the end of next year.
ExecuJet Aviation and Hawker Pacific have begun operating the new Skypark FBO at Kuala Lumpur’s Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport. Malaysian deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak officially inaugurated the new facility on August 7.
ExecuJet Aviation and Hawker Pacific today officially opened their new joint-venture Skypark FBO at Kuala Lumpur Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Malaysia. The development is part of the wider $91 billion Skypark Subang project to transform the former Subang International Airport–Kuala Lumpur’s main airport until the opening of Kuala Lumpur International Airport in 1998–into a business aviation gateway.
