While the May 9 crash of a Superjet 100 during a demonstration flight in Indonesia most importantly took a human toll, it also might have dealt a serious blow to the aspirations of the Russian civil aircraft industry to compete with Western manufacturers in the global market.

SuperJet International, manufacturer of the new Sukhoi Superjet 100 regional airliner, announced here at the NBAA show that Comlux The Aviation Group will be the launch customer for an executive variant of the aircraft. The agreement covers two Sukhoi Business Jets (SBJs) and options for two more.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft delivered the first Superjet 100–S/N 95007–to Armenian airline Armavia today during a ceremony held at Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport. At the ceremony, the participants named the aircraft after the USSR’s first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. Authorities assigned it tail number EK95015.

Superjet International secured a key export order for the SSJ100 in January, while SSJ manufacturer Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) acknowledged that certification of the 95-seat regional jet had stalled once again to late January–some four weeks later than the most recent slipped deadline of December 28.

The third Sukhoi Superjet 100 landed in Italy for the first time on August 25 at Turin’s Caselle Airport, where it continued its flight-test campaign in preparation for expected year-end certification. The aircraft (prototype S/N 950004) took off from Sukhoi Civil Aircraft’s flight-test center in Zhukovsky, near Moscow.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft (SCAC) identified its first potential customer in Southeast Asia last month when it announced an agreement with Indonesia’s Kartika Airlines covering a firm order for 15 Sukhoi Superjet 100s and options on another 15. The SSJ100/95Bs under consideration would carry either 98 passengers in a single-class configuration or 86 passengers in a dual-class configuration.
