Although the ability to speak and understand the English language is considered mandatory to operate an airplane on an international flight, really understanding what a controller at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport was trying to tell the crew of an Air China flight recently became a source of frustration and anxiety to all parties, according to a recording posted on LiveLeak.

An air traffic tower controller and his supervisor at New York JFK Airport were placed on administrative leave last month following an incident in February when two of the controller’s children were permitted to issue instructions to pilots on an ATC frequency during atwo-day span.

Gordon Newstrom, founder of Mesaba Aviation, died in December. He was 93. An expert floatplane pilot, Newstrom in 1944 founded Mesaba Aviation, the predecessor to Mesaba Airlines.
