In an effort to increase the awareness of Jacksonville, Florida’s aviation system, the city’s aviation authority has renamed three of its owned and operated airports as part of a rebranding campaign. Cecil Field (VQQ) became Cecil Airport, while Herlong Airport (HEG) was renamed Herlong Recreational Airport. The former Craig Airport (CRG) is now Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport.

The Jacksonville (Fla.) Aviation Authority is building a 21,000-sq-ft hangar and hoping a maintenance company will lease the facility. This is the airport’s first new hangar since the authority took over the airport from the U.S. Navy in 1999. Another 13,000-sq-ft hangar is available next to the new hangar and offers office and shop space.

Signature Flight Support acquisition personnel have had a busy first half of the year. Late last month, they closed on a deal to acquire the AirKaman FBO at Jacksonville (Fla.) International Airport (JAX) for an undisclosed sum. The facility, which becomes Signature’s 44th, services corporate aircraft and has contracts for airline refueling and servicing.

Executive Beechcraft’s three Kansas City area FBOs (owned by BBA Aviation) have joined Avfuel’s dealer network and will offer Avtrip reward points and contract fuel pricing to participating pilots. Avfuel also announced that Craig Air Center in Jacksonville, Fla., has become an Avfuel dealer, and participating customers can receive Avtrip points and Avfuel contract pricing.

Two new local business aviation associations are forming on the East Coast. The First Coast Business Pilots Association (FCBPA) in the Jacksonville, Fla. area is soliciting members from northeast Florida and southeast Georgia. Membership is open to business aviation pilots. The Jet Center Aviation Group recently announced it has signed a long-term lease with the airport authority at Jacksonville (Fla.) International Airport and will build a new FBO there. The facility will be the fourth for the small Florida chain, which also has facilities at Hollywood International, Miami International and Daytona Beach International Airports.

Former HAI president Roy Resavage died last month after a long illness. He was 62. Resavage spent seven years at the helm of HAI, where he led the association through difficult financial times. He is credited with improving operational efficiency and the financial health of the association, as well as increasing attendance at Heli-Expo.

In a rare decision, a federal judge in Jacksonville, Fla., ruled last month that the FAA was more responsible for a fatal accident than the pilot. All four people on board a Piper Cherokee Six were killed on Dec. 12, 2001, when the piston single crashed in heavy fog.

The turn of the new year has seen several new facilities opening in time for the winter season.

• In Oakland, Calif., the Business Jet Center had its grand opening on December 1. The FBO terminal is the old airline passenger terminal on the historic airport, and the art deco motif used in the renovation reflects its history.
