Business aviation access to Tokyo is about to get easier. Beginning October 31, Tokyo's Haneda International Airport (RJTT), previously opened to business aircraft arrivals from overseas only between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., will allow eight slots for domestic and international flights (up to four arrivals) during the previously prohibited hours. Slots for nighttime arrivals remain unlimited.
MJets, the sole handling provider for business aircraft at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, is seeing a recovery in traffic volumes following the severe disruption to Thailand’s economy during the political unrest in May and June. Between March 16, when the company’s five-year handling license began, and the end of July, the new MJets FBO handled barely 150 aircraft, with the number dropping by 60 percent, to around 20 per month in May and June.
Flight planning and handling groups have abandoned Bangkok Don Mueang Airport after Airports of Thailand (AOT) awarded exclusive handling rights for business aircraft operations to local charter operator MJets. They say they have been compelled to establish alternative handling operations at the Thai capital’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport amid concerns about the new handling operation at Don Mueang.
Major Chinese, Japanese and Korean airports, members of the newly formed East Asia Airports Alliance, have signed a “Green Airport Declaration” committing to adopt a number of measures to accelerate voluntary environmental improvements in all areas of airport operations, including maintenance and line service. A spokesman for the group told AIN it has three primary areas of focus.
Japan has opened Tokyo Haneda Airport to international general aviation flights via 16 slots per hour, available between 11 p.m. and 5:59 a.m. daily. Outside those times, international flights will have to land at other designated airports to clear customs and procedural requirements before being permitted to fly to other destinations within Japan. Applications should be filed by the 15th of the month before the proposed date of flight.
The former Delta Air Lines terminal at Louisville (Ky.), International Airport is now home to a dedicated U.S. Customs office. Arriving international corporate flights can now taxi directly to customs rather than having passengers wait inside the aircraft while parked on the FBO ramp until customs officials arrive.
For the first time in its history, Japan early next year will dedicate an airport to business and commuter aircraft. In February major airlines will vacate Nagoya Airport, on the outskirts of Tokyo, and move their operations to the new Central Japan International Airport. Nagoya is expected to be recast as Japan’s first hub airport for commuter and business aircraft.
Operators of aircraft flying across the Atlantic to destinations in the American West and Midwest are wasting time and money by making technical stops at popular transit points in the northeastern U.S., according to Duluth, Minn. FBO Monaco Air.
Gimpo Airport, formerly known as Kimpo Airport, located near downtown Seoul, South Korea, reopened last month to international business aircraft operations. The airport had been open to domestic flights only since Inchon International Airport, 32 miles from downtown Seoul, opened in March 2001. Gimpo operating hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The customs and immigration clearance office operates between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
NBAA has received reports of changes to customs clearance procedures at some airports for international general aviation aircraft arrivals. In Los Angeles, for the time being, aircraft that have heretofore cleared U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Van Nuys Airport, Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and Long Beach Airport must now clear customs at Los Angeles International Airport, according to a customs official.
