ViaSat has completed the addition of its Yonder high-speed Internet coverage to Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and surrounding areas.
The first geostationary satellite for India’s Gagan GPS space-based augmentation system (SBAS)–essentially similar to Waas–was lost on April 15 when its launch rocket’s second-stage cryogenic engine failed to ignite. That followed the early-April loss of Intelsat’s Galaxy 15 geosat, which was carrying the FAA’s Pacific Waas transponder. The satellite was slowly drifting out of orbit and could no longer provide usable GPS accuracy corrections.
Rockwell Collins and Connexion by Boeing are teaming to create a broadband satellite data service for business jets that will fly first aboard Bombardier’s Global 5000 and Global Express XRS.
While the FAA’s current WAAS network offers equipped users with improved GPS performance across the continental U.S. and Alaska, it still does not provide the redundancy and reliability required from an aviation navigation service. So the FAA has now contracted to obtain additional geostationary satellites (GEOs) to rectify this shortcoming.
