Saab Electronic Defense Systems is introducing Rigs, a lightweight, compact product for business aircraft and helicopters that can display navigation, attitude, flight, reticle and video information to the crew in a head-up display (HUD) presentation. Rigs conforms to European TSO requirements applicable to HUDs for transport aircraft, as well as night-vision-goggle requirements. It can be used simultaneously with NVG and the information can be presented in either red or green, depending on the flight application.
Transport Canada awarded type certification to Esterline CMC’s CMA-2700 enhanced vision system (EVS) sensor on November 18. The CMA-2700, part of CMC’s SureSight family, is paired with head-up guidance systems made by Rockwell Collins.
A new entrant to the infrared enhanced-vision system (EVS) market, Lexavia, is about to receive FAA certification of its first camera/display installation, on a Eurocopter AS355 TwinStar law-enforcement helicopter. Chuck Crompton, business development director for the Pensacola, Fla.-based integrated systems house, said the STC will soon be followed by several others.
Bell’s Aeronautical Accessories brand will distribute the TrueView Enhanced Visions Systems infrared thermal imaging system worldwide. It is currently certified via supplemental type certificate in the U.S. and Canada for the Bell 206B and 206L. TrueView is developing systems for the Bell 407 and 429.
ITT Corp. will spin off its defense segment into a standalone business–ITT Exelis–later this year. The new company will be based in McLean, Va., and led by David Melcher, currently president of ITT Defense and Information Solutions, as CEO. The company’s 2011 revenue is estimated at $5.8 billion. Christopher Bernhardt will continue to lead the Electronic Systems unit in Clifton, N.J.
Raytheon has used its missile experience to develop an infrared countermeasures (IRCM) capability that is vying to provide a LAIRCM (large-aircraft IRCM) solution for the U.S. Air Force’s fixed-wing platforms, and a CIRCM (common IRCM) system for the U.S. Army’s helicopters. A recent test series was conducted with great success.

The Pensacola, Fla.-based company has decided to direct its varied design and manufacturing resources toward a new approach to EVS marketing.
