Europe’s regional airlines continue to struggle against European Commission (EC) bureaucrats who do not appreciate their value or the problems poor legislation and punitive taxation cause, or that they enable European economic prosperity. This was the central message from the “Regions at Risk” conference held by the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) in Porto, Portugal on April 18 and 19.

An ATR 72-201 operated by Russian regional airline UTair crashed this morning shortly after taking off from Tyumen in Western Siberia, killing at least 31 of the 43 occupants, including the entire four-person crew. Flight 120 came down in a snow-covered field near the town of Korkovka at around 7:50 a.m. local time, minutes after taking off for a 400-mile flight to the oil town of Surgut.

GE Aviation and Iberia Maintenance have signed an agreement that will provide Iberia with OEM technical support for its maintenance and repair services on CF34-8C/E engines. The agreement expands Iberia’s current overhaul capability for the CF34 engine and licenses GE’s engine maintenance technology.

Spanish business aviation group Gestair (Stand 450) and the country’s flag carrier Iberia have joined in a 50-50 joint venture to create Corjet Maintenance. Corjet specializes in maintenance of business jets, as well as providing logistics and parts support.

IAG plans to combine the aircraft acquisition philosophies of British Airways...

The tie-up between Spanish flag carrier Iberia and the UK’s British Airways to create International Airlines Group (IAG) will pave the way for an overhaul of the way the pair buy aircraft, according to the new company’s finance chief. The two airlines plan to combine buying in a new fleet renewal strategy led by IAG with its stronger buying power, although they will continue to run and maintain their fleets separately, Enrique Dupuy said.

Following the recent worldwide financial crisis and recession, regional airline services in Europe are set to change as operators move to introduce bigger equipment. Air Nostrum chief executive Carlos Bertomeu, for one, predicts that his carrier’s recent strategy to increase average capacity–and thereby reduce unit costs–will be copied elsewhere in the industry.

With the worldwide economy still in the grasp of the largest downturn since the Great Depression in the 1930s, most observers had predicted slim pickings at this year’s show.

Bombardier Aerospace yesterday announced a new firm order for 15 CRJ1000s from Spanish regional carrier Air Nostrum. The Valencia-based Iberia Regional partner has now placed firm orders for a total of 35 CRJ1000s and has revealed itself as the previously unidentified launch customer for the 100-seat-class jet.

GE Aviation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Iberia Maintenance designating the company as the preferred regional fulfillment center for CFM56-5A MRO in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
