Helicopter Association International (HAI) president Matt Zuccaro joined with staff members Tuesday at the show center to formally open the 2013 edition of Heli-Expo in Las Vegas.

“This is the biggest show we’ve ever had,” Zuccaro told the crowd before the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “All the numbers exceed anything we’ve ever had previously…I think we have a show that will probably take you all three days to walk through here and meet everybody.

“And remember, this is Las Vegas…so whatever you do here, stays here,” Zuccaro quipped.

In a ceremony at the Sikorsky exhibit yesterday, the company celebrated its 90th anniversary in homage to its founder and aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky. The crowd of some 300 at Booth No. C5028 listened to Sikorsky’s story in his own words, words that still resonate in the industry and that included the admonishment, “In aviation, use the word ‘impossible’ with the greatest care.” Sikorsky president Mick Maurer concluded the ceremony by offering his own view of the future, saying the obligation of Sikorsky over the next 90 years is to continue to push the boundaries.

The Medallion Foundation is focused on changing the culture and attitude of commercial air operators and pilots flying in Alaska. The verdict? So far, so good. Fatal controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents among commercial air carriers have been reduced 57 percent from 2000 to 2009, according to a paper recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

A pair of California Highway Patrol helicopter pilots saved the life of a hiker who was being stalked by a mountain lion just before sunset in the hills about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento. The hiker called for help after trying to scare the cat away by throwing rocks and shouting at the big animal. When the CHP arrived they found the cat standing face-to-face about 20 feet away from the hiker. The pilots flew low over the cat and scared it off, allowing for the hiker’s rescue.

Hawker Beechcraft, which is displaying a King Air 350i this week at Aero India in Bangalore, continues to lead the turboprop market segment in India. Citing JetNet data, the company said 82 percent of the new turboprop business aircraft delivered into India from 2002 to 2011 were King Airs, while 83 percent of the total fleet of registered business turboprops in the country are King Airs. It has also cornered the turboprop market for state and federal organizations in India, with these operators flying more than 20 King Airs in the country.

CAE delivers training for the Falcon 10; 50/50EX; 100; 900B/C/EX/EX EASy/EX EASy II; 2000/EX/EX EASy; and 7X. FlightSafety training includes the Falcon 10/100, Falcon 20/20-5, Falcon 50/EX; Falcon 200; Falcon 2000/DX/LX/EX/EX EASy, Falcon 900/C/DX/EX/EX EASy/LX; and 7X.

NBAA recently announced a call for nominations for its annual flying safety awards. This year NBAA has added a new category to recognize the pilots of smaller aircraft because it “believes that safety accomplishments in all forms should be recognized.” With that in mind, NBAA will honor a private pilot’s outstanding safety achievement with the Private Pilot Safety Award. The former Pilot Safety Award has been renamed the ATP or Commercial Pilot Safety Award.
