The 45,000-sq-ft hangar at Phoenix Heliparts’s Mesa, Ariz. facility is near capacity.

From a husband-and-wife operation launched 10 years ago in the family garage in Mesa, Ariz., Phoenix Heliparts has grown into major player in the art of restoring older helicopters to a new and useful life.

The company’s main facility in Mesa, about 14 miles north of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, now totals about 45,000 sq ft and there is an additional 25,000 sq ft and a designated landing area at the airport for flight testing.

Boeing Unmanned Little Bird

Boeing said on December 13 that it demonstrated an unmanned Little Bird helicopter for the Republic of Korea Army. The MD 500 variant flew for about 25 minutes at the army’s aviation school in Nonsan, South Korea.

Speaking of the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract MD Helicopters signed last year, Lynn Tilton, CEO of Mesa, Arizona-based company, said, “That’s the highlight [of 2011], to serve those who serve for love of country. And it goes back to our roots of 1964, when Hughes Helicopter [predecessor of MD Helicopters] first won a military contract.” She made the comments at a Heli-Expo 2012 press conference in Dallas yesterday.

The debut of the Boeing AH-6i light attack/reconnaissance helicopter at the Dubai Airshow this month was just the latest iteration in this aircraft’s long and complicated history. The design first flew in the 1960s as the Hughes Model 300. It was adopted by the U.S. Army as the OH-6A and further developed for civilian customers as the Models 500 and 530.

The light at the end of the tunnel is not a train bearing down on MD Helicopters Inc., said chairman and CEO Henk Schaeken. Rather, it illuminates a return to profitability for the Mesa, Ariz. helicopter manufacturer. Problems with three major programs put strains on operations and finances last year.

Heli-Mart recently expanded its MD Helicopters support capabilities by purchasing an 80 percent stake in Phoenix Heliparts. As a result, Heli-Mart has added to its inventory Phoenix Heliparts’ FAA-approved repair station at Falcon Field (FFZ) in Mesa, Ariz., where support of MD Helicopters ranges from routine maintenance to complete repair and restoration.

MD Helicopters has requested a concessionary renegotiation of the land leases for its main plant and offices at Falcon Field in Mesa, Ariz. The company made the petition to the City of Mesa in July after the rent on most of its 46-acre site automatically doubled during the last year under terms of the leases, first signed in 1983 when the company was known as Hughes Helicopters.

John Hall is the new president of Indianapolis-based Premier Jet Aviation. He was previously senior v-p of sales and marketing for CitationShares and was a founding member of the Cessna CitationJet division.

Eric Bachelet was named president and CEO of CFM International, the joint Snecma and General Electric company. Bachelet joined Snecma in 1971 and has held various positions with the Safran Group.
