The 45,000-sq-ft hangar at Phoenix Heliparts’s Mesa, Ariz. facility is near capacity.

From a husband-and-wife operation launched 10 years ago in the family garage in Mesa, Ariz., Phoenix Heliparts has grown into major player in the art of restoring older helicopters to a new and useful life.

The company’s main facility in Mesa, about 14 miles north of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, now totals about 45,000 sq ft and there is an additional 25,000 sq ft and a designated landing area at the airport for flight testing.

The FAA has approved Shanghai Hawker Pacific Business Aviation Centre (SHPBASC) as an overseas repair station. This makes the FBO at Shanghai’s Hongqiao International Airport the first dedicated business aviation support facility to hold this Part 145 approval in mainland China. Japan, with the world’s third largest economy (recently surpassed by China), is home to 68 of the world’s Fortune 500 companies, 52 of which are based in the greater Tokyo area. Yet the country until recently has not embraced corporate aviation.

The world’s busiest airport in terms of overall passenger traffic has added a new international terminal. The Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport opened May 16 after more than a decade of planning and nearly four years of construction.

America’s Aloha State learned recently that flying around Hawaiian airports means connecting with the FAA at some point. As part of a $1.4 million federal grant to upgrade Honolulu port security, the state’s transportation department purchased an unmmaned aircraft with HD cameras to track activity on the ground.

At a ceremony late last month, Narita International Airport opened the first dedicated terminal for business and private jets. Operated by the airport authority, Premier Gate–which will be open from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.–promises privacy for passengers along with swift inbound and outbound passport control procedures through the use of dedicated onsite customs, immigration and quarantine facilities. In conjunction with the opening of the new terminal, the airport said it will extend the permissible duration for corporate jet parking to 30 days from 14.

Called Premier Gate, the new facility is close to Narita’s Terminal 2 and features co-located customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) facilities and a private lounge for departing and arriving passengers.
