NBAA will again host the Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE) next January 18 and 19. The recession prompted the association to cancel the ABACE show that was to have been held earlier this year in February.

The expansion of opening hours and its improved fire and rescue capability seem to have paid off at the UK’s Oxford Airport, which saw significant increases in business aviation traffic during July. On several days, the privately owned airport handled 20 business aircraft movements, compared with an average of 10 in July last year. The airport’s standard opening hours are now 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
The 2009 Asian Aerospace show in Hong Kong is set to achieve significant growth in visitor numbers with organizers reporting that pre-registrations are more than 100 percent up on the same period ahead of the inaugural show in 2007.
Though the former Hong Kong International Airport–Kai Tak–closed on July 5, 1998, its passenger terminal, control tower and hangars remain in ad hoc use, ranging from flea markets to a job-training center, and now, on the runway, the world’s largest golf driving range. “Kowloon City used to be the place for dinner before flying from Kai Tak Airport. Now it’s quiet,” says Victor Lau, a helicopter pilot with the Government Flying Service (GFS) of China’s Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong (HKSAR). In July 1998, the GFS was the first tenant of the abandoned Kai Tak Airport to move 45 minutes west to the new Chek Lap Kok (CLK) Airport on Lantau Island.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been so optimistic about the Asian business aviation market, especially in North Asia and China,” Jason Liao, Hawker Beechcraft’s regional vice president for China and Southeast Asia, told AIN.
The Asian Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (ABACE) will return to Hong Kong next year, increasing to a two-day format, February 3 and 4. This year, the U.S. National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and the Asian Business Aviation Association (AsBAA) jointly staged a one-day forum in Hong Kong on February 14.
Hong Kong helicopter operator Heliservices is getting mixed signals from local authorities, ones it claims affect its ability to stay in business. Heliservices has been providing direct helicopter air-taxi services between Chek Lap Kok Airport and a pair of waterfront sites on Hong Kong proper for several years.
Metrojet pioneered business aviation services in Hong Kong and is one of the earliest private business aircraft operators in Asia. It has decided to extend its maintenance offerings to all operators to ensure the continued growth of business aviation in the region.
Bombardier Aerospace has added three new business aircraft service facilities to its international support network. Arkia Maintenance of Tel Aviv, Israel, and Metrojet of Hong Kong, China, have been named Bombardier line maintenance facilities, and Ruag of Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, has been named an authorized service facility.
