China is launching its own helicopter show. The China Helicopter Exposition 2011 (Booth No. 503) will be held September 15 to 18 in Tianjin and is sponsored by the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) and its Avicopter division. Currently China has a population of 1.4 billion but has only 200 civil helicopters.
Donaldson has delivered the first full-scale engine air particle protection system (EAPPS) to Sikorsky for the CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter destined to achieve initial operating capability (IOC) with the U.S. Marines in 2018. Qualification testing of the EAPPS will begin in May.

Kaman and Lockheed Martin continue to expand the missions being flown by the unmanned K-Max helicopter at the Army’s Yuma, Ariz., Proving Ground. The helicopter recently made multiple guided airdrops at 10,000 feet msl. The 16 payloads airdropped included medical equipment, food, simulated leaflets and bulk cargo and were programmed by the GPS-guided Joint Precision Delivery System (JPADS) or triggered from a remote ground control station.
Eurocopter’s compound helicopter demonstrator, the X3 (“X cube”), met its first speed target on November 29 when it achieved 180 ktas in level flight at “reduced engine power.” The modified Dauphin has also expanded its flight envelope in altitude and bank angles. The X3 features a conventional main rotor and two propellers on stub wings.
