With his usual straightforward, no-nonsense manner HAI president Matt Zuccaro welcomed Heli-Expo attendees and HAI members to the opening breakfast and annual member meeting on Tuesday morning at the Anaheim Convention Center. Board chairman Tony Burson started off the meeting by focusing on the organization’s mentoring and future-focus.

“Our military-to-civilian transition seminar yesterday, presented by Sikorsky’s Stacey Sheard, played to a packed room,” said Burson. “My challenge to you is to mentor new people into helicopter aviation in 2014,” he continued.

The annual Salute to Excellence Awards dinner, held on Wednesday, March 6, was, for the 50th year, the premier evening event of Heli-Expo. HAI encourages the highest standards of professionalism in the helicopter industry, saluting those who deserve to be recognized for their contributions to the rotorcraft community. This year, Helicopter Association International’s Salute to Excellence Awards recognized the achievements and merits of a few individuals and organizations among its more than 3,000 members.

The Helicopter Association International is accepting nominations for the 2013 Salute to Excellence Awards program, which honors “outstanding achievements and exceptional merits of individuals and organizations in the international helicopter community.” The awards are open to any individual or organization, according to HAI. Categories include pilots, mechanics, instructors, safety, law enforcement, medevac and more. The awards will be presented on March 6 during Heli-Expo 2013 in Las Vegas.

Speaking at the opening session at Heli-Expo yesterday, NTSB Chair Deborah Hersman, praised Helicopter Association International (HAI) for its creation of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST) and its new Safety Accreditation Program. She also challenged HAI members to continue efforts to promote Safety Management Systems (SMS) through IHST’s SMS Toolkit. When asked about NTSB’s contributions to IHST efforts, Hersman was quick to clarify: “You know we do not sit on committees, such as IHST, as voting members.

The Helicopter Association International (Booth No. 8632) launched a safety program designed to raise the bar for helicopter operators worldwide at Heli-Expo yesterday. Based on the new rotorcraft language in the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), the HAI Accreditation Program accounts for mission-specific criteria for a wide range of helicopter operations.

Four industry operator organizations have written comprehensive amendments to the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), to facilitate implementation of the safety standard by helicopter operators.

International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) representatives are offering two seminars during Heli-Expo to introduce operators to IS-BAO parameters. The seminars–Introduction to IS-BAO and the IS-BAO Auditor Accreditation Workshop–are available at the Helicopter Association International (HAI) Booth (No. 8632).

Matt Zuccaro, president of the Helicopter Association International (HAI), wants attendees of Heli-Expo to understand right up front that he and his association members are team players. “Too often in the past, helicopters were seen as a segment of aviation unto itself,” he explained. Major industry groups are expressing their displeasure with key sections of the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) governing helicopter EMS operations. In formal comments filed last week with the FAA, they voiced objection to portions of the rule mandating helicopter terrain awareness and warning systems (HTaws), IFR weather reporting and operational control centers.

With an attendance expected to be within 1 to 3 percent of last year’s more than 17,000 and the increase in exhibitors filling the floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center, Helicopter Association International chairman Mark Gibson said the association is optimistic about this Heli-Expo.
