Hamilton Sundstrand, a supplier in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner program, and Lufthansa Technik have signed a long-term contract calling for the German maintenance facility to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul services on Hamilton Sundstrand’s components for the Boeing 787. The agreement also designates Lufthansa Technik as an official member of Hamilton Sundstrand’s Boeing 787 MRO supplier network.
It’s less than two years since Alain Bellemare became president of Hamilton Sundstrand at the end of 2009 at the height of the aerospace industry’s most recent downturn. So this is his first Paris Air Show at the helm of the U.S.-based group and he’s in a hurry to make his mark with a plan to grow its annual revenues from around $6 billion now to $10 billion by 2015.
Equipment and systems supplier Hamilton Sundstrand has announced pre-show product-support agreements worth almost $350 million. It also won contracts to supply power controllers for the Airbus A350 and control systems for Pratt & Whitney’s PW810C and PW1000G engines. The company’s NP2000 propeller is flying test missions on a C-130, while its propeller for the Airbus A400M spins on another C-130 test bed.
By all indications, the era of the “more electric” airplane suits Hamilton Sundstrand and its president, Dave Hess. Supplier of the entire primary power generation and virtually all of the power distribution on the Boeing 787 airliner, the Windsor Locks, Connecticut-based division of United Technologies (UTC) expects to generate $15 billion in revenue over the life of that one program.
The merger in 1999 of air management and engine control specialist Sundstrand and power systems provider Hamilton Standard has proved to be a prescient move that shrewdly anticipated the aerospace industry’s requirement for companies with sufficient technological capability to take on a systems integration role.
