Stage III Technologies on Friday ceased operations pending further funding, leaving just one company–Miami-based Quiet Technology Aerospace–currently providing hush kits for the Gulfstream II and III market. Stage III’s hush kit was FAA certified in 2005 for the Gulfstream II, IIB and III, and the first four installations, priced at $1.1 million, were scheduled for this March, July, August and September.

Stage III Technologies, which is still working to obtain certification of its thrust reverser for the Gulfstream II and III, claims that its Stage 3 hush kit averages at least 7 dB quieter than that of its only competitor, Quiet Technology Aerospace (QTA).

Really Quiet of Mojave, Calif., expects to receive FAA certification this month for its Stage 3 hush-kit installation on the Gulfstream II, IIB and III. The FAA has flown the test airplane, a Really Quiet-owned GII, and verified a “cumulative noise level six to seven decibels below Stage 3,” according to the company. It hopes to have a certified airplane at this month’s NBAA show.

Air China Business Jet will launch its planned charter service with a Gulfstream IV, the first large-cabin Gulfstream to be based in China. The aircraft was officially delivered to Air China representatives at last month’s NBAA Convention in Orlando, Fla. The aircraft is being provided under an initial minimum one-year lease, which also gives Air China the option to purchase a new G200, G300 or G400 before the lease expires.

Miami-based Quiet Technologies Aerospace in late January received FAA approval of its Stage 3 translating-ejector hush kit for Gulfstream IIs, IIBs and IIIs.

Really Quiet has doubled the warranty on its Stage 3 hush kit and thrust-reverser system for the Gulfstream II. The new warranty is two years, 1,000 hours or 500 cycles, whichever comes first. Really Quiet of Reston, Va., was the first of two companies to receive an STC for installation of hush kits on Spey-powered Gulfstreams.

The FAA and NTSB are helping the Mexican government in the investigation of a 1975 Gulfstream II (N987SA) that crashed last Monday in a remote jungle area on the Yucatan Peninsula near Cancun with nearly four tons of cocaine on board. Interestingly, the twinjet changed hands at least twice in the past month, and was purchased one week before the accident by a Florida pilot with a history of legal and financial problems.

Universal Avionics has obtained supplemental type certification (STC) for its EFI-890R display retrofit in a Gulfstream III. IFR Avionics of Van Nuys, Calif., finished fitting the airplane in late June with four 8- by 9-inch flight displays, Vision 1 synthetic-vision system and an application server hosting Jeppesen electronic charts.

“Today, 13 percent of all the world’s business jets are based in Europe,” said Larry Flynn, Gulfstream president for product support. “This is our largest market outside the United States. As such, we have ramped up our parts inventory to ensure our European operators as well as transient operators in Europe receive the parts they need, when they need them.”
