The European helicopter industry must educate operators about the benefits of Sesar, the European Union’s next-generation air traffic management (ATM) systems and procedures, if it is to derive any benefits from the system, according to several speakers at a conference on “The future of the rotorcraft sector” at Helitech.
Universal Avionics will be honoring two hardworking companies with its 2013 International Top Dealer and 2013 North American Top Dealer awards today at 3 p.m. at its NBAA booth (No. N6108).
The Top International Dealer award is going to Scandinavian Avionics for the second year in a row. The company’s work with Universal Avionics’s EFI-890R flight deck retrofits and Precision-Area Navigation (P-RNAV) upgrades were key to earning the award.
Twin Commander Aircraft (Booth No. C9432) announced that authorized service center Eagle Creek Aviation Services of Indianapolis has completed a third Grand Renaissance Commander for the Colombian Army. The 690B had sat idle for three years before being ferried to Eagle Creek for the 10-month modification and refurbishment.
“Nose-to-tail” aircraft MRO and completions specialist Stevens Aviation is here at NBAA to announce several new service initiatives. A service provider for Beechcraft, Bombardier, Cessna, Embraer, Gulfstream, Piaggio and Pilatus, Stevens provides services ranging from aircraft painting to engine overhauls at five locations (Greenville and Greer, S.C.; Dayton, Ohio; Nashville, Tenn.; and Denver, Colo.) It has 124 technicians network-wide, with nine of them having earned “FAA Technician of the Year” honors.
Global aviation services provider Spirit Avionics (Booth No. C11248) recently reached a sales milestone when its global parts support division surpassed $10 million in sales in less than a year, a rate that equates to a 60-percent increase over the previous year’s tally. “This growing segment of our business is just another example of how Spirit Avionics is evolving into a world-class aviation services provider,” said Tony Bailey, the former CEO of Comlux Aviation Services, who was recently named as Spirit’s president.
Garmin unveiled a GPS watch, dubbed D2, designed specifically for aviators today. Features include direct-to and nearest functions; a built-in adjustable altimeter; altitude-alerting capabilities; the option to display both local and Zulu/UTC time; and the ability to integrate with Garmin’s iOS and Android Pilot apps and VIRB HD action camera. Customized data fields can also display GPS ground speed, GPS track, distance, estimated time en route, bearing and glide ratio. When used with the Pilot app, the D2 can load flight plans and create waypoints.
Elliott Aviation is working with Chippewa Aerospace on an STC to upgrade Hawker 800-series jets with the latest Phase V software for Honeywell Primus Epic CDS/R avionics. Elliott will seek its own STC for the NZ-2010 FMS 6.1 version 03040 software upgrade to the Hawker’s NZ-2000 FMS. These STCs will allow operators to fly Waas LPV approaches, although the CDS/R system isn’t required, as Waas LPV is available with the Hawker’s original SPZ-8000 avionics and the NZ-2000 software upgrade.
While the FAA mandate to install ADS-B out equipment for aircraft flying in U.S. airspace by Jan. 1, 2020 is more than six years away, aircraft operating in some countries’ airspace must be compliant starting this December. Avionics manufacturers are ready with equipment to meet the mandates and avionics shops and aircraft manufacturers are working on supplemental type certificates (STCs) to smooth the path for upgrades in many business jet types.
Eurocopter obtained the first license in Europe permitting localizer-performance with vertical guidance (LPV) approaches on a helipad, at its development and production facility in Donauwörth, Germany. The helicopter manufacturer emphasized that such a procedure improves safety in poor visibility, since aircraft can overfly obstacles more safely.
FreeFlight Systems has interfaced its Model 1201 Waas/GPS sensor with the Garmin GTX 330 mode-S transponder to provide an additional 1090-MHz extended-squitter ADS-B Out upgrade solution for GTX 330 owners. The upgrade solution gives aircraft owners more ADS-B Out equipage choices, depending on their aircraft type, existing avionics and flying requirements. It also ensures compliance with the FAA’s Jan.
