Garmin last month notified distributors that it has decided to discontinue production of the GNS 480 GPS/navcom receiver after a significant decline in sales of the WAAS-capable product as more customers migrate toward the Garmin GNS 430W/530W line of WAAS units. Garmin acquired the GNS 480 product when it purchased the assets of UPS Aviation Technologies in 2003.

The WAAS revolution appears set to begin. A new IFR WAAS-capable GPS/navcom, the Apollo CNX80 all-in-one navigator from UPS Aviation Technologies–introduced last month at the Sun ’n’ Fun Fly-in in Lakeland, Fla.–could give Garmin’s popular GNS 430 and 530 navigation units some serious competition. Similar in size and function to the Garmin GNS 430, the CNX80 is claimed to be the first such box to include an IFR WAAS GPS receiver.

The combination of GPS position, digital communications networks and the Internet has made possible–and affordable–a variety of products and services for continuous real-time tracking of aircraft fleets by dispatchers on the ground. Nowhere has such capability been more eagerly accepted than in the realm of helicopter flight operations, many of which are now using data-link services to keep close tabs on their aircraft at all times.

While the GPS wide-area augmentation system (WAAS) is likely to be commissioned for public use in July, the local-area augmentation system (LAAS) has fallen back by 12 months, with commissioning of the first installation now forecast in late 2005. This setback for LAAS was revealed to attendees at a December briefing given by FAA’s Satellite Operational Implementation Team (SOIT).

Garmin announced the availability of fault-detection and exclusion (FDE) software for its GNS 430/530 GPS/navcom radios. According to a spokesman, FDE uses a mathematical algorithm to monitor the accuracy and reliability of GPS signals. Designed to detect erroneous GPS data, the software automatically excludes that data from the active navigation solution.

The Garmin GNS 480 all-in-one GPS/navcom is now approved for primary-means WAAS navigation and localizer precision with vertical guidance (LPV) approaches. According to Garmin, pilots flying with the $11,995 unit will be able to make “ILS-like” approaches into thousands of U.S. airports not served by ILS once the FAA implements LPV procedures.

Garmin has added a long list of aviation-specific applications to its iQue 3600 Palm-powered personal digital assistant (PDA) to create a multitask handheld GPS navigator for pilots. The iQue 3600a comes pre-loaded with terrain warning software, Jeppesen navigation database and an electronic logbook, in addition to standard automotive turn-by-turn direction software and other applications.

As part of its evaluation of loran as a potential backup to GPS, the FAA has contracted Rock-well Collins to build a combined GPS/loran variant of its standard multimode navigation and landing receiver. The unit’s primary function will be to provide GPS navigation, with automatic switchover to loran should GPS signals be lost or degraded, and automatic reversion to GPS when normal service resumes.

Arinc has flight tested a new differential-GPS precision approach and landing system designed to withstand electronic jamming. Conducted on April 5 at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico in an Air Force C-12J (the military version of the Beech 1900C), the tests evaluated the performance of Arinc’s developmental local-area differential GPS (LDGPS) landing aid.
