Canadian electronics manufacturer Guardian Mobility Co. (Booth No. 1165) has received FAA STC approval for installation of the company’s Skytrax 3X GPS tracking system in Bell 205A, 205A-1, 212, 214B and 214B-1 helicopters.

The wraps officially came off Garmin’s new G1000 integrated avionics system late last month at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, Wis. Picked to fly aboard the Cessna Citation Mustang personal jet and Diamond DA-42 piston twin, the G1000 represents the first complete cockpit from the Olathe, Kan. avionics manufacturer.

DOT Secretary Norman Mineta announced last month an action plan aimed at mitigating the vulnerability of GPS to inadvertent interference and deliberate jamming, both of which were disclosed in a September 10 report by the DOT’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge, Mass.

The business and commuter aircraft products business of Trimble Navigation has been purchased by newly established FreeFlight Systems, a sister company of Aircraft Systems & Manufacturing of Georgetown, Texas. Business aviation veteran Steve Williams is president of FreeFlight Systems, which will be based in Waco, Texas.

Garmin introduced its latest portable GPS receiver, the GPSMAP 196, at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. Typically priced at $999, the new unit features an improved processor, 320 by 240 pixel monochrome display, pop-up map details and a panel-like page that shows facsimiles of an HSI, airspeed indicator, atltimeter, turn-and-bank indicator and a vertical-speed indicator.

Eclipse Aviation is expecting to achieve two major certification goals–flight-into-known-icing and EASA certification–for the EA-500 very light jet by July, according to Mike McConnell, vice president of sales and marketing. Full avionics functionality should follow by year-end, aided by Eclipse’s choice to install dual Garmin GPS 400W WAAS-certified moving-map GPS navigators to provide missing GPS functionality.

Garmin last month notified distributors that it has decided to discontinue production of the GNS 480 GPS/navcom receiver after a significant decline in sales of the WAAS-capable product as more customers migrate toward the Garmin GNS 430W/530W line of WAAS units. Garmin acquired the GNS 480 product when it purchased the assets of UPS Aviation Technologies in 2003.
