Mesa Air Group closed its Hawaii-based go! operation on April 1 following some eight years of financial struggles. According to Mesa, the decision stemmed from a desire to concentrate its resources on its now growing mainland operations and minimize its exposure to “at risk” flying. Before the cessation of Hawaiian operations, capacity purchase code-share agreements accounted for 98 percent of the group’s business.

Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group expected to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in February, after the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in late January approved its reorganization plan.
Mesa Air Group rang in the new year with a resolution of sorts, as it started the process of restructuring its operations by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 5. The move came some six weeks after United Airlines filed a court complaint to block Mesa’s efforts to replace some of the 50-seat CRJ200s scheduled for removal from the United Express system on April 30 with ten 70-seat CRJ700s.
Mesa Air Group will take a controlling stake in Republic Airways subsidiary Mokulele Airlines under the terms of a deal signed yesterday that will see three Republic/Shuttle America Embraer E170s exit the Mokulele fleet next month in favor of Bombardier CRJs flown by Mesa’s Hawaiian subsidiary, Go!. Under the terms of the contract, Mesa will take a 75-percent interest in the joint venture and Republic a 25-percent share.
