Rich Oldfield, GKN Aerospace technical director, told AIN that technology remains at the heart of the company’s ability to succeed in the market and it invests heavily, especially in composites, metallics and developing a “niche portfolio in transparencies, protection systems and coatings, which many of our competitors don’t have.” Alongside this are “important technologies in inspection, assembly and automation.”

GKN Aerospace (Chalet G1) comes to Farnborough content in having achieved “a good set of results” in 2013 as it increased sales by 10 percent to £7.6 billion (around $10 billion). “It was a good year at GKN pretty much across the board–bar land systems,” said Kevin Cummings, CEO of GKN aerospace during a pre-airshow briefing.

Following delivery last week of the first 787-9 rudder built in China by Chengdu Civil Aviation (CCAC), Boeing extended its supply chain further for yet another airfoil subassembly, choosing the UK’s GKN Aerospace to build the winglet for the 737 Max. GKN joins Korean Air Aerospace Division (KAL-ASD) in South Korea as co-supplier of the raked, dual-feather-design winglet.

UK aerostructures and equipment group GKN Aerospace has been contracted by Snecma to provide low-pressure turbine (LPT) cases for the Silvercrest SC-2C engine for the Cessna Citation Longitude. Under a long-term agreement valued at $15.7 million, production of LPT cases by GKN Aerospace-Norway for delivery to Snecma’s Villaroche facility will accelerate as the engine is prepared for the Longitude’s scheduled entry into service in 2017.

With defense budget cuts starting to bite, GKN Aerospace (Chalets (B) 73, Hall 2b Stand F140) is stepping up its efforts to reduce dependence on military business. At a recent press briefing, the UK-based group’s CEO Marcus Bryson predicted that in 2013 almost 70 percent of revenues are likely to come from civil orders, with Airbus remaining its largest customer (accounting for 32 percent of revenues in 2012).

A growing need to access top engineering expertise, which exists in India today, has led GKN Aerospace to launch a new engineering center in Bangalore with around 100 skilled engineers, of which 70 will be transferred from its new Engine Operations (formerly Volvo Aero) office, according to a GKN spokeswoman.

GKN Aerospace’s acquisition of Volvo Aero is starting to bear fruit, giving the UK-based aerostructures group a significant boost in this growing market segment. This year, the addition of the Sweden-based engine systems manufacturer is expected to boost total revenues from GKN’s aerospace division by approximately $700 million, to $3.5 billion.
