Landmark Aviation and the Asheville Regional Airport Authority celebrated the grand opening of the FBO chain’s FBO terminal at Asheville Regional Airport in North Carolina on April 16. Landmark spent $4.6 million on the new facility, which features a 23,000-sq-ft hangar, pilot’s lounge, flight planning room and conference room. Landmark has 41 FBOs in the U.S., Canada and Europe and is owned by GTCR Golder Rauner and Platform Partners.

Honda Aircraft, which announced last month a one-year delay in certification of its HondaJet as a result of supplier issues, remains confident, buoyed by an order book for “well over 100 aircraft.” According to Stephen Keeney, senior manager for corporate affairs, “the vast majority of our customers are sticking with us.”

Cessna Citation II, Wilmington, N.C., Jan. 4, 2008–The Citation II ran out of fuel and was significantly damaged while landing gear-up at Wilmington International Airport. No injuries were reported. The jet had made three missed approaches to Wilmington in fog before declaring an emergency on the fourth. The left engine had quit on the third approach and the right quit on the fourth.

GE Honda Aero Engines has started building the first HF120 engine for FAA certification testing scheduled to begin early next year.

Hardware for this engine began arriving at General Electric’s Lynn, Mass. facility last month, keeping the program on track for certification later next year. Honda Aircraft’s HondaJet and the Spectrum Aeronautical S40 Freedom are launch customers for the 2,095-pound-thrust HF120.

A spokesman for Honda R&D Americas has revealed that the company expects to begin flight tests “soon” of its new light jet–the HondaJet–at its facilities at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, N.C. The light twinjet, he said, will be powered by a turbofan designed and built by Honda, but beyond that he declined to comment.

GE Honda Aero Engines has built and tested eight HF120 engine cores and eight turbofan engine configurations to prepare for formal certification testing later this year, the company said yesterday at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis. “We’re optimizing the engine configuration before certification testing,” noted GE Honda president Bill Dwyer.

The FAA has awarded Dassault Aircraft Services Wilmington the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) Diamond Certificate of Excellence. It is the highest of five awards an organization can receive for its dedication to maintenance training.

Fayetteville Air Service FBO is out and the city of Fayetteville, Ark., is in as far as fueling and other transient aircraft services are concerned at Drake Field. The sudden departure of the FBO occurred just as the airport is gearing up for business traffic associated with the college football season featuring the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

Honda Aero held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new engine plant in Burlington, N.C., on November 28. The plant will assemble and test new GE Honda Aero HF120 turbofans selected to power the HondaJet and Spectrum Aeronautical’s
