Kestrel Aircraft is abandoning plans to set up the headquarters and new production plant for its K-350 single-engine turboprop in Brunswick Landing, Maine. Yesterday, the company announced a $118 million deal to locate in Superior, Wisc., on land adjacent to Richard I. Bong Airport and begin construction in June. The agreement is being financed by a variety of grants, low-interest loans and tax credits from the city of Superior, Douglas County and the state of Wisconsin. The majority of the funding is coming from the state, and the deal is viewed as a political plus for Wisconsin Gov.
Sometimes simple is better. That’s the philosophy Connecticut-based aviation services provider Key Air heeded when it designed its FBO at Minnesota’s Anoka County-Blaine Airport (ANE), near Minneapolis. In deference to local aesthetics the company avoided the use of shiny chrome and marble, relying instead on wood, stone and brick.
General Dynamics Aviation Services (GDAS) plans to shutter its facility located at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) at the end of this month. The closure affects about 70 employees.
“We have issued warn notices to our employees in Minneapolis. We deeply regret that good, loyal, competent people are being affected through no fault of their own,” said a Gulfstream Aerospace spokesman.
Key Air’s Twin Cities (Minneapolis) and Treasure Coast (Fort Pierce, Fla.) FBOs are now offering jet-A at significantly lower prices, but accompanied by a handling fee set by the type of aircraft. Prices as of January 12 showed Key Air charging $2.23 per gallon for jet-A at St. Lucie County International Airport in Fort Pierce and $2.31 at Anoka County-Blaine Airport in Minneapolis.
Cirrus Design late last year struck a deal with the Duluth, Minn. Economic Development Authority to move its single-engine jet research and development activity to a former Northwest Airlines maintenance hangar adjacent to its headquarters at Duluth Airport. The authority on December 27 passed a resolution of intent to lease the 189,000-sq-ft facility to Cirrus for 25 years, with an option for 25 more.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was scheduled to receive an Enstrom 480B turbine single last month. Special equipment was to include a loud-hailer PA/siren and mounts for a camera and searchlight. The agency will use the helicopter for missions such as non-fire resource assessment, census and law enforcement, including compliance with state game, fish and recreational vehicle laws. The aircraft will be based in Brainerd.
