Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are being criticized for a deal they struck with NASA to base a VIP Boeing 767-200 and two Gulfstream Vs at the space agency's Moffett Field, minutes away from Google's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. Moffett Field was transferred from the Navy to NASA in the early 1990s, but community opposition has prevented expanding the airport's use to general aviation or air cargo operations.

Beech King Air E90, Carlsbad, Calif., July 3, 2007 – Taking off from McClellan/Palomar Airport on an IFR flight plan in IMC, the King Air hit 230,000-volt powerlines and was destroyed. The pilot and passenger were killed, and one person on the ground was hit by debris. Visibility was one-quarter mile, with an indefinite ceiling of 100 feet. Temperature and dew point were 63 degrees F.

Embraer E170, San Francisco, Calif., May 26, 2007 – The Republic Airlines Embraer E170 and Skywest Airlines Embraer Brasilia almost collided at the intersection of Runway 1L and Runway 28R at San Francisco International Airport. The Skywest Brasilia was cleared to land on Runway 28R at SFO, and the Republic E170 was cleared to take off from Runway 1L.

The California State Assembly voted to approve Assembly Bill 700, a requirement for the City of Santa Monica to measure emissions of aircraft using Santa Monica Airport (SMO) for one year. “If the legislation is approved and signed into law, this would mark the eighth study of its kind regarding emissions at SMO,” the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) explained. AB 700 still must be considered by the California State Senate.

The NTSB last month announced an investigation into a May 26 incident at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in which two regional airliners came within 50 feet of colliding. At about 1:30 p.m. the tower air traffic controller cleared SkyWest Airlines Flight 5741, an Embraer Brasilia arriving from Modesto, Calif., to land on Runway 28R.

In an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last month, Macquarie Infrastructure revealed that it is adding two FBOs at Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport in Northern California to its acquisition of the Mercury Air Centers FBO chain. The deal calls for Mercury to buy the San Jose Jet Center and ACM Aviation. If all goes as planned, Macquarie will add 26 FBOs to its existing Atlantic Aviation FBO chain.

In an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed on June 12, Macquarie Infrastructure revealed that it is adding two FBOs at Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) in Northern California to its acquisition of the Mercury Air Centers FBO chain.

NBAA has welcomed news that a new landing-fee structure at Santa Monica Municipal Airport, Calif., was approved by city officials. Scheduled to become effective August 1, it replaces a previous program that had been rejected by the FAA on the grounds it unjustly discriminated against certain aircraft types.

The wreckage of Mitsubishi MU-2 N966MA was found submerged in about 20 feet of water five days after it crashed March 11 into the Napa River, under unknown circumstances while on approach to Napa County Airport, Calif. The owner/pilot–believed to be a cancer physician–and his wife were killed. VMC prevailed for the night cross-country flight from Imperial County Airport, Calif.

Two pilots and two other crewmembers were killed when their UC-35, a military version of the Citation 560, crashed and caught fire March 10 about half a mile short of the runway while on the approach to Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. Reported visibility was five miles in mist. The crew was returning from a “proficiency training” mission intended to help them maintain their flying skills.
