With a firm launch customer in hand and fourth test aircraft ready to take flight, China’s ARJ21 program appears to have found its stride just ahead of this year’s Singapore Airshow. As the show approached, the first three flying test beds, assembled by Comac subsidiary Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co. (SAMC), had flown some 220 hours over the course of 69 flight days.

By the time the three examples of the Comac ARJ21 regional jet had accumulated some 220 flight hours by the middle of this month, China had proven that it could assemble and fly an indigenous airplane derived from a Western design. But the country’s aspirations to become a global aerospace power will demand more than an ability to adapt already mature Western technology to programs meant almost solely for domestic consumption.

Embraer’s first Lineage 1000 executive jet is making a debut here at the Dubai Airshow, six months after it was delivered to launch customer Aamer Abdul Jalil al Fahim of Abu Dhabi at the EBACE show in Geneva in May. Eight more of the new $42.9 million airliner-class twinjets are set to be delivered to customers in the Middle East–almost half of the 20 orders placed to date.

Bombardier’s CRJ1000 ap-peared on track for certification soon after this week’s Dubai Air Show until the company announced a few months ago that a software glitch would force it to delay approval by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) until the first quarter of its next fiscal year, starting February 1.

Canadian air carrier WestJet is the launch customer for StandardAero’s latest expansion. The contract calls for the MRO to work on the CFM56-7B engines for the airline’s 81 Boeing Next Generation 737s; the number of airplanes is expected to reach 135 by 2016. The exclusive 12-year OnPoint contract is valued at more than $850 million.
