GE Aviation has launched its GEnx TruEngine program on the GEnx-1B engine and granted TruEngine designation to Air India’s GEnx-1B engine fleet. Air India has ordered GEnx-1B engines for its 27 Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
Almost three full decades ago a battle was raging over the powerplant options for what was then the all-new Airbus A320. The competitors–CFM International and International Aero Engines (IAE)–were making claim and counter-claim as to the potential advantages their respective engines would bring to the aircraft, which had been developed to grab a slice of the huge single-aisle market until then dominated by the ubiquitous Boeing 737.
GE Aviation’s M601E-11A engines are now powering Anchorage, Alaska-based AeroMetric’s King Air E-90. The upgrade is the first done by Smyrna Air Center of Smyrna, Tenn. The Power 90 program is designed for King Air 90 aircraft and replaces the installed engines with 705-shp M601E-11A engines.
GE Aircraft (Stand 358), whose TechX engine Bombardier selected to power its under-development Global 7000 and Global 8000 ultra-long-range business jets, has rebranded the big turbofan as the “Passport.”
Tam Aviação Executiva has signed an agreement with GE Aviation to become an authorized service center for M601 and H80 turboprop engines. The MRO will offer line maintenance, removals and re-installations of engines and line-replaceable units and engine spares. GE Aviation will provide Tam AE with material support and training. A spokesman for GE told AIN that Tam AE is a new industry partner.
The Pentagon issued a “stop work” order for the GE Aviation F136 engine in late March, and the Fiscal Year 2011 U.S. defense budget was finally signed into law last month, without funding for the alternative F-35 engine. But the fight for the F136 is not yet over.
Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) and GE have collaborated on a facility to train technicians on GE engines, including the GE90, CF6, CF34 and GEnx. QSTP is located in Qatar Foundation’s Education City, which was developed as a campus to bring together research and business. According to a GE spokeswoman it is the first GE facility of its kind outside North America.
GE Aviation has signed an agreement with Solo Aviation naming the MRO an authorized service center for the M601 and H80. It allows Solo Aviation to offer line maintenance, removal and re-installation of engines and LRUs and engine spares for the M601 and H80. Under the terms of the agreement GE Aviation will provide Solo Aviation with material support and training.
Air India will expand MRO capabilities at its Mumbai, India facility to include GE90 engine overhaul. The current schedule calls for the Mumbai facility to be certified for basic GE90 MRO by next year. According to the company, Air India plans to build a new MRO facility in Nagpur, India, that will include GE90 testing capabilities.
