Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur (ACA), the aviation group that manages and owns the French airports Cannes Mandelieu, Saint-Tropez and Nice Cote d’Azur, tapped Air BP to be the sole fuel supplier at Cannes Mandelieu Airport, the companies announced today at the NBAA Schedulers and Dispatchers Conference in New Orleans.

Helicopter operator Inaer, which is part of the Avincis group, has been awarded a five-year contract for emergency medical services in France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Starting January 1, five Eurocopter EC135T2+s will be dedicated to Marseille, Avignon, Toulon, Nice and Gap hospitals. Avignon and Marseille bases will be subcontracted to Mont Blanc Hélicoptères, with the latter city’s helicopter being available around the clock. It is the first time a contract that includes several hospitals has been signed in France.

Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur (ACA) has purchased the majority of shares of Aéroport du Golfe de Saint-Tropez (AGST), which operates Gulf of Saint-Tropez Airport. With more than 42,500 aircraft movements last year, Cote d’Azur ranks as the second busiest business airport in France behind only Paris Le Bourget, and the new acquisition will add another 7,000 movements to that total. The French Riviera gateway features recently renovated facilities and contributes to the economic development of the region. A study last year recognized the airport’s economic impact at approximately €170 million.

Cannes-Mandelieu Airport might become one of the first members of the Mediterranean Business Aviation Airports Association.

As airports along the western Mediterranean coast watch business aircraft movements climb slowly back toward pre-recession numbers, a move has begun to create an organization of FBOs and airports involved in ground handling, fuel and services for this industry segment.

According to Umberto Vallino, marketing and statistics manager at Cannes-Mandelieu Airport, located in the center of the region, such an organization would benefit the ground handlers as well as business and private aircraft owners and operators.

Cannes Airshow expects 20,000 visitors

Organizers of the sixth annual Cannes Airshow, to be held from June 7 to 9, expect to welcome more than 20,000 visitors at its Cannes-Mandelieu International Airport venue in the heart of the French Riviera. “There is nearly a 15-percent increase in participation this year compared with the 2011 show,” said event director Didier Mary. While billed as a general aviation event, the Cannes Airshow typically draws numerous business aviation exhibitors and aircraft. Past exhibitors have included Cessna, Dassault, Embraer and Hawker Beechcraft.

In its just released 2012 to 2016 strategic agenda, Aéroports de la Côte d’Azur, the French company managing Cannes and Nice airports, is planning major investments for business aviation. In Nice, parking capacity is expected to increase from 51 to 72 aircraft positions in 2014. In Cannes, an additional hangar will open late this year, and a second one–“if needed”–opens in late 2016.

Business airport traffic in the Côte d’Azur, France’s wealthy Mediterranean Riviera, suffered dramatically as a result of the global financial crisis in the second half of 2008 and in the first few months of this year. The two airports in the region–Nice and Cannes–are promoting themselves to two different market segments, and both are upgrading their FBO facilities in anticipation of increased traffic when the economy improves.

Every summer, wealthy visitors to Saint-Tropez make extensive use of helicopters, either private or chartered, to bypass traffic jams on the busy roads.

France’s DGAC civil aviation authority has imposed slot coordination at Cannes-Mandelieu Airport in the south of France beginning May 23 under a trial period that will run through the end of October. According to Umberto Vallino, the airport’s customer service manager, Cannes is the first dedicated business aviation airport in Europe to be subject to mandatory arrival and departure slots.
